KION/Telemundo 23 Station Shutters Local News
A longtime source of local news along California’s Central Coast is no more. The CBS and FOX affiliate KION-TV in Salinas suddenly announced Tuesday it was shutting down its newsroom and ending local newscasts, effective immediately. The station is partnering with a Bay Area-CBS station, but the move blindsided more than a dozen staff members who were suddenly laid off. Telemundo 23, which shared a newsroom with KION, also shut down, bringing an end to Spanish language newscasts in the region. Former KION Managing Editor and Anchor Jeanette Bent and former Telemundo 23 bilingual reporter and producer Sandra Santos join Insight to talk about what the impact of this closure means for the local community, especially at a time when local news organizations around the country are degrading or in short supply.
Modesto Focus Launches
California’s Central Valley is no stranger to a lack of news coverage in its communities. A new website from the Central Valley Journalism Collaborative, The Modesto Focus, aims to help. Marijke Rowland is the Editor of The Modesto Focus and Garth Stapley is the publication’s accountability reporter. They join Insight today along with Joe Keita, Executive Editor of the “Central Valley Journalism Collaborative” to talk about why local news matters in Modesto.
