Kai Hansen's 'I Want Out' & Helloween's Split
Update: 2025-12-21
Description
Kai Hansen, co-founder of Helloween, hit rock bottom in 1987 during their US tour, contracting Hepatitis B. Despite pushing for shorter tours, his bandmates rejected his proposal. Frustrated by creative differences, Hansen wrote I Want Out, a raw track for their next album. Released in 1988, the song became his unspoken goodbye letter. Hansen left Helloween in 1989, forming Gamma Ray. I Want Out remains a setlist staple, symbolizing his journey from leaving to finding his way back home.
