Live cattle futures surged on Friday, with prices rising by $4.95 to $5.25 per hundredweight. This followed cash trades in the northern regions earlier in the week, priced at $208 to $210 per hundredweight. Dressed beef also traded at $330 per hundredweight.Feeder cattle futures also saw substantial gains, nearing their daily limits, with contracts up by $8.70 to $9.22 per hundredweight. However, the CME Feeder Cattle Index fell by $2.09 to $329.88 on November 25th.Beef exports saw a four-week low in sales, with 12,165 metric tons sold in the week of October 16th. Despite this, shipments were strong, reaching a high of 13,346 metric tons, the highest in eleven weeks.Wholesale boxed beef prices were lower in the Friday morning report from the USDA, with Choice boxes decreasing by $1.39 to $366.89 per hundredweight and Select boxes falling by $5.13 to $350.38 per hundredweight. This widened the spread between Choice and Select beef to $16.51.The estimated cattle slaughter for Wednesday was around 124,000 head, bringing the weeks total to 369,000. This is 12,000 head more than last week but still 2,509 head below the same week last year.
