M23 withdrawing from DRC's Uvira in attempt to 'show of good faith' in peace process
Update: 2025-12-16
Description
The Rwandan-backed M23 rebel group says it will withdraw from Uvira in the eastern Democratic Republic of Congo. The fighters seized the city last week. The group says it wants to demonstrate good faith in the ongoing peace process after an appeal from American mediators. M23 launched a new offensive earlier this month, despite efforts by Qatar and the US to end the conflict. Al Jazeera’s Alain Uaykani has the latest developments from Uvira, eastern Democratic Republic of Congo. Paul-Simon Handy is the Institute for Security Studies' Regional Director for East Africa and its Representative to the African Union.
