Mamdani Moves to Gracie Mansion, Leaves Astoria
Update: 2025-12-08
Description
Mayor-elect Zohran Mamdani, a thirty-four-year-old Queens Assembly member, will move into Gracie Mansion, the traditional mayoral residence, when he takes office on January first. This decision, announced on Instagram, is due to family safety and his focus on an affordability agenda. Mamdani, who currently lives in a rent-stabilized apartment in Queens, is the first mayor since Ed Koch to have previously lived in a rent-stabilized or rent-controlled apartment. Gracie Mansion, built in seventeen ninety-nine, offers five bedrooms and five bathrooms across eleven thousand square feet. Mamdanis move marks a significant change from his vibrant Astoria, Queens, neighborhood, but he assures that the spirit of the community will always be a part of him and his work.
