Description
Max Meizlish, a senior research analyst, highlights how Chinese money laundering networks are fueling America's fentanyl epidemic by cleaning drug proceeds for Mexican cartels. These networks also enable wealthy Chinese nationals to bypass capital controls and move money out of China. Between 2020 and 2024, the Financial Crimes Enforcement Network (FinCEN) tracked over $312 billion in suspicious activity linked to these networks. Meizlish suggests the Chinese Communist Party might be aware of, or even permit, some of this activity, especially if it benefits its members. He advocates for targeting Chinese chemical precursor companies and using economic sanctions to combat this issue.
