Mind over Matter – episode 7 – professional and public engagement with Prof. Kathryn Jeffery (UCL)
Description
Prof. Kathryn Jeffery is at the University College London and the Institute of Behavioral Neuroscience.
Alongside her intensely exciting work on the encoding of complex, three dimensional space in the hippocampal-entorhinal circuit, she manages to perform an astonishing amount of outreach activities, speaking to audiences at schools, museums and professional societies, as well as collaborate with artists and make glass pieces herself!
As always, I asked Prof. Jeffery our three traditional closing questions.
1)Which skills you wish you had picked up earlier on in your career?
Try harder to get funding earlier on. People who start out with big 5 year grants with several post docs on them get a head start in their career.
2) What is the most successful theory in neuroscience today?
Synaptic plasticity model of memory. Even though the evidence for it has not been conclusive so far, I would really surprised if it gets completely overturned.
3) What is a recent piece of data you are most excited about?
Increasing amount of evidence on the role of the hippocampal-entorhinal system in keeping track of time.
Happy listening!
