Mosquito-Borne Viruses Spread in NSW & VIC: Take Precautions
Update: 2025-12-07
Description
Health experts warn of potentially dangerous mosquito-borne viruses, Japanese encephalitis and Kunjin, spreading across New South Wales and Victoria this summer. Japanese encephalitis was found in Horsham, Victoria, and sixty local government areas in New South Wales are at higher risk. Kunjin virus was identified in Cowra, Western New South Wales. Mosquito numbers are expected to rise with warmer weather, emphasizing the importance of protection against bites to prevent diseases like Japanese encephalitis, Murray Valley encephalitis, Kunjin virus, Ross River virus, and Barmah Forest virus. Japanese encephalitis is spread by mosquitoes from infected animals and can cause severe brain inflammation. Kunjin virus, also spread by mosquitoes, typically causes milder symptoms. There is no cure for either virus, but a vaccine is available for Japanese encephalitis. Prevention is key for Kunjin and other mosquito-borne viruses, with recommendations including using repellents, wearing loose-fitting clothing, and removing standing water around homes.
