Digest

This podcast delves into the chilling murder of Valerie and Harvey Looney, owners of Pizza Plus in a small Virginia town. The investigation begins with the discovery of their bodies by an employee, Mary, and quickly focuses on Brian Lee, an employee with a strained relationship with Valerie. However, the investigation takes a turn when Mary suggests another suspect, Homer, a strange man who frequented the nearby car wash. Despite the initial focus on these suspects, the investigation ultimately leads to a shocking revelation: Chris Looney, the son of the victims, was the perpetrator. The podcast meticulously reconstructs the events of the night of the murders, revealing Chris's motive as financial gain. He had been struggling financially after his divorce and had been denied money by his parents. Knowing they had a $245,000 life insurance policy, he saw an opportunity to solve his financial woes. Years later, the case was reopened by a new sheriff and deputy who brought in Rich Buyington, an interrogation expert. Buyington employed the "read" technique, a high-pressure interrogation method that combines pressure with words and acts of sympathy, to wear down the suspect and make them believe the police are on their side. This technique ultimately led to Chris's confession, revealing the truth behind the brutal murders. The podcast concludes with Chris Looney's conviction and sentencing to two life sentences. His family issued a statement expressing their love for him but their inability to forgive his actions.

Show Notes

On a spring night in 2009, a middle aged married couple was closing up the local pizza place they ran in a small Virginia mountain town. The husband walked to the back of the restaurant and grabbed a large bucket of ice. He carried the bucket out the back door, and dumped the ice into the grass. He stood up and felt the cool breeze on his face – it was a nice change from the hot pizza ovens he’d been working around all night. But then, he heard screaming coming from inside the restaurant. Without thinking, he dropped the bucket, and rushed back inside. But when he discovered what was happening, all he could do was turn around and run for his life.
