Neil Young this weekend – recorded at Elysèe Montmartre, Paris, France on Dec. 11, 1989. Radio broadcast of RTL-FM on January 20, 1990.

In an acoustic setting, Neil Young playing to a sold-out house in Paris and captured for posterity by RTL-FM.

Nothing would seem more appropriate for this, or any other weekend so far this year, than a set by Neil Young. As someone who is carrying the torch for music of Protest, he has struck many a harmonious chord among those who are seeing this time in our lives as a particularly dark one. It’s that outspoken fearlessness that has come to the aid of many who are questioning what is going on all around us and who feel alone and helpless in a world gone quickly sinister and strange.

That he’s been something of a constant in the cause of humanity and personal freedom since the days when Ohio was a new song and we were, back some fifty-five years ago, in shock and pain over the sudden and devastating events at Kent State, speaks volumes about his ongoing commitment to bringing awareness in a world wrapped up in cynicism and despair.

I would like to think of this acoustic concert as a healing balm for the souls of the dismayed and hopeless. We were warned – we are there now – we don’t need to be.

This concert is some thirty-five years old – and even then we were going through changes – maybe not to the oppressing degree they are now, but we were questioning and we were looking – something we’ve always done in some form or another – to some events or change of spirit that’s caused us to stop and take a look at ourselves and wonder just what this madness is all about.

We’re lucky we have Neil Young with us – still with us – still giving voice to the angers and fears and hopes we all have – this is the part of life a lot of us never considered. This is the life we are smack in the middle of right here and right now.

So we have Saturday – usually a time for rest, hanging out and reflection. Seems these weekends are more critical now than ever before.

Sit back – press play and dive in. Neil Young has your back – and we got each other – we got this thing.
