Nestlé's Chocolate Bars: Less Cocoa, More Cost
Update: 2025-12-11
Description
Chocolate lovers, brace yourselves. Nestlés popular Toffee Crisp and Blue Riband bars are no longer covered in milk chocolate. Instead, theyre now encased in a milk chocolate flavour coating. This shift reflects a trend in the confectionery industry to reduce cocoa content and replace it with more affordable vegetable oils. British regulations require at least twenty percent cocoa solids and twenty percent milk solids for milk chocolate, but these reformulated bars fall short. The cost of cocoa futures has more than doubled due to extreme weather events linked to climate change, leading to shrinkflation - smaller products at higher prices. Our favorite chocolate treats are facing a challenging future.
