Digest

This podcast delves into two interconnected themes: the evolving landscape of gender equality in sports and the rise of supersized trucks in American culture. The first chapter focuses on the upcoming Olympics and the milestone of gender parity in participation. However, it also highlights the increasing scrutiny and restrictive policies surrounding women's sports, particularly regarding sex testing and eligibility. The chapter discusses the historical use of invasive and unreliable sex testing methods, raising concerns about privacy, discrimination, and the impact on athletes' mental health. The second chapter explores the growing trend of supersized trucks in American culture, examining the reasons behind their popularity, including masculine identity and perceived safety. It discusses the potential dangers associated with their size, particularly for pedestrians and children, and the concept of "Petro Masculinity," which links the push for fossil fuels to hypermasculine identity and political authoritarianism. The chapter also explores the environmental impact of these vehicles, including the practice of "rolling coal," where truck owners modify their vehicles to emit large amounts of black smoke. The podcast connects these two themes by highlighting the ways in which societal expectations of masculinity and the desire for dominance can influence both the treatment of women in sports and the choices people make regarding transportation. It raises important questions about the role of gender stereotypes, the impact of technology on our environment, and the need for greater safety measures to protect vulnerable road users.

The Rise of Supersized Trucks and Petro Masculinity

This chapter explores the growing trend of supersized trucks in American culture, examining the reasons behind their popularity, including masculine identity and perceived safety.

Keywords

Sex Testing

The practice of verifying the sex of athletes, particularly women, to ensure they meet eligibility criteria for competitions. This has historically involved invasive and unreliable methods, raising concerns about privacy, discrimination, and the impact on athletes' mental health.

Petro Masculinity

A term coined by theorist Cara Daggett, it describes the link between the push for fossil fuels, hypermasculine identity, and growing political authoritarianism in the United States. It often manifests in the desire for large, powerful vehicles, like trucks, as a symbol of masculinity and dominance.

Difference of Sex Development (DSD)

A term used to describe variations in sex characteristics that do not fit typical male or female definitions. Athletes with DSD have faced scrutiny and restrictions in sports, raising ethical and medical concerns about the use of sex testing and the impact on their careers.

Rolling Coal

A practice where truck owners modify their vehicles to emit large amounts of black smoke, often as a display of masculinity and defiance. It is considered environmentally harmful and disrespectful, and has been linked to the concept of Petro Masculinity.

Cybertruck

An electric pickup truck manufactured by Tesla, known for its distinctive angular design and futuristic features. It has become a symbol of both technological advancement and the continued appeal of large, powerful vehicles in American culture.

Front Over Collisions

A type of car accident where a vehicle strikes a pedestrian or object directly from the front, often at low speeds. The increasing height of trucks has made these collisions more common and dangerous, as pedestrians are less visible to drivers.

Q&A

  • What are some of the historical examples of sex testing in women's sports, and what were the consequences for athletes?

Historically, sex testing in women's sports has involved invasive and humiliating practices, such as nude parades and chromosome tests. These tests were often unreliable and discriminatory, causing significant distress and harm to athletes.

  • How does the growing popularity of supersized trucks relate to the concept of Petro Masculinity?

The desire for large, powerful trucks is often linked to Petro Masculinity, which connects the push for fossil fuels to hypermasculine identity and political authoritarianism. These trucks are seen as symbols of strength, dominance, and resistance to environmental concerns.

  • What are some of the safety concerns associated with the increasing size of trucks?

Supersized trucks pose significant safety risks, particularly for pedestrians and children. Their height makes them difficult to see, increasing the likelihood of front over collisions, while their weight and design can lead to more severe injuries in accidents.

Show Notes

This is the first year the Olympics have gender parity between men's and women's teams - but does it mean gender equity? ESPN writer Katie Barnes and Rose Eveleth, host of NPR and CBC's Tested, join Brittany to discuss the barriers that women athletes still face - from men-only categories to women-only sex testing.

And later - in recent years, you may have noticed some new behemoths prowling the streets of America: giant trucks. The sheer size of them has sparked policy debates – many are so big that it's not possible to see a child crossing directly in front of them, and there's been a spike in pedestrian deaths. Brittany is joined by Angie Schmitt, author of Right of Way, to chat about why these big trucks are so popular and what they say about our cultural anxieties.

Way to gloss over the fact that automobile manufacturers are ALSO marketing bigger and bigger SUVs to suburban women, dubbed the "suburban arms race." If you actually pay attention to male US car culture, you'd find most family men would rather drive sport wagons that are only available in Europe because "all big dumb men want big dumb pickups."
