Opinion | Guest column: Support Ballot Issue 1A to fund road, bridge projects without any new taxes
Description
In this election, Summit County voters will have the opportunity to shape the kind of community we all want to live in.
On any given day, this small community can blossom from just over 30,000 residents to more than 150,000 people. Tourism supports our community and keeps our local economy thriving. But that success also comes with challenges. When our population quintuples overnight, our roads, transit systems and infrastructure feel the strain.
A “YES” vote on Ballot Issue 1A allows the Summit County Board of County Commissioners to help alleviate some of that strain by expanding the already authorized use of lodging tax dollars from child care and housing to also include road and infrastructure projects, all while keeping our taxes exactly where they already are.
We heard loudly that residents wanted us to prioritize the repaving of the Swan Mountain Road. With 1A, we can continue that momentum — funding the completion of Swan Mountain Road, addressing rockfall mitigation efforts on Dillon Dam Road, and ultimately accelerating timelines for other critical road and infrastructure projects throughout the county.
A YES vote on 1A isn’t just about roads — it’s about ensuring our infrastructure keeps pace with the community we are and the visitors we welcome.
Let’s keep Summit County moving forward.
Vote YES on 1A.
