This is Episode #31. Today, I am introducing you to an integral member of my own health and wellness team. After dealing with a pretty significant Diastasis Recti and stress incontinence after my pregnancies, I was frustrated. I was a health and wellness advocate and super physically aware, so why was I dealing with these issues? But it turns out, while I was fairly in control and in tune with my body, and while I had taken all sorts of anatomy courses, there was one area that I had gone almost 28 years without fully understanding; My pelvic floor.

Megan Rorabeck is the author of “Between the Hips, A practical guide for Women”. She is a Doctor of Physical Therapy and a Board-Certified Women’s Health Clinical Specialist who is on a mission to help women all of the world understand issues like bladder leakage, constipation, and painful, anticlimactic sex are not normal.

And before the men in my audience go to turn this off, wondering what this has to do with permaculture, or any ladies that don’t classify themselves as “dealing with incontinence” start to scroll for another podcast, I want you to pause and consider this with me…

As people who believe in taking care of the natural world around them, and people who believe in finding abundant health in all areas of life, we should also be people who are willing to have “uncomfortable conversations” about any area of our health. AND not only can having transparent conversations like this help the women who are dealing with these issues (which is most women), but it can also help society support mamas-to be, mamas who have been, and anyone, man or woman who maybe just needs more clarity and awareness of their pelvic floor.

In This Episode You’ll Learn:

  • Megan’s background in physical therapy and pelvic floor health, and her training to become a board certified women’s health clinical specialist.
  • What pelvic floor dysfunction looks like. (Bladder leakage, constipation, pain with voiding, diahrea, pain with intercourse, rawness, discomfort of any kind between the hips!)
  • What to expect when seeing a pelvic floor physical therapist. A typical evaluation and what professional help might look like.
  • Connecting brain to body, and how our brain body connection is such a big part of training our pelvic floor.
  • How our daily habits can influence our pelvic floor health and wellness. Hydration, diet, mobility, and mindfulness are all areas of our life that can augment our pelvic floor awareness and health.
  • Does the pelvic floor need to be strengthened or lengthened? There are 2 different types of dysfunction, being “too tight” or being “too weak”. Sometimes both!
  • Practical tips that people can do to help their pelvic floor health. Behavioral health and lifestyle changes are some of the biggest areas that can impact our pelvic floor muscles and health
  • The importance of water to our bladder health and digestive system. (8 oz of water every 1.5-2 hours) Do not overload with water, and do not deprive yourself of water.
  • Eat more fruits and vegetables to encourage healthy stools.
  • Motion is lotion!
  • Advice to help mamas to be, who are preparing for pregnancy, mamas in the midst of babies, and mama’s who have been!!
  • Why it is NEVER too late to “fix” or “heal” our pelvic floor issues.
  • What is means to Megan to live an abundant life or have an abundance mindset 😉
