Pakistani Cleric Sentenced for Calling for Judge's Beheading
Update: 2025-12-16
Description
A senior leader of the banned Islamist party, Tehreek-e-Labbaik Pakistan, was sentenced to thirty-five years in prison by an anti-terrorism court in Lahore. The leader, Zaheerul Hassan Shah, was convicted for publicly calling for the killing of then-chief justice Qazi Faez Isa in 2022. The call for violence was made after Isa granted bail to a man from the minority Ahmadi community in a blasphemy case. The Ahmadi religion is considered heretical by Sunni militants, and their homes and places of worship are frequently targeted. The Tehreek-e-Labbaik Pakistan party was banned earlier this year after deadly clashes with police, and its leader, Saad Rizvi, has been missing since violent confrontations during a pro-Gaza rally.
