Founded in 1804 as Napoleon’s answer to overflowing churchyards, Père Lachaise began as an empty hillside at the city’s edge. Along moss-lined paths, we visit the graves of Jim Morrison, Héloïse and Abélard, Édith Piaf, Honoré de Balzac, and Eugène Delacroix. Yet Père Lachaise holds darker seams as well: the Paris Commune executions at the Communards’ Wall, the bloodshed of the 1814 assault, and echoes of the city’s violent past. Between chapels and catacombs, five thousand trees turn this cathedral of the dead into a living refuge for foxes and birds, where nature and mourning entwine.
