âThere was a girl named Penny, Sheâs Daddyâs little jewel. And she was so excited For her first day at school.â
San Diego, California Author Leela Hope studied English Literature at Berkeley, earning a degree in 1989. Her writing covers a span of several genres, but she always returns to her first love, children's fiction. And it is there that her star shines brightest. Always finding something unique on which to base her stories, she makes each tale a learning experience for children as well as offering some pointers for parenting!
In this new series of books written for preschool children â PENNYâS FIRST DAY AT SCHOOL is Book 1 of the series â we meet Penny as she is off to her first day at school â backpack, favorite dress and food for recess Penny is tall for her age - a fact that doesnât bother Penny until she is bullied at school for being different. She finds solace in her teacher who encourages her to turn the other cheek and just be nice when she is sad about the teasing. Penny returns to the classroom and uses her height to help even the bully who made her sad. The day turns âround and Penny is happy, having learned to be nice, to be proud of who she is, that appearances donât matter, and that everyone is different.
As always Leela Hope does not force her message. She just drops it at our feet (along with some wonderful illustrations) and leaves the emphasis up to parents. This is another lovely book from the talented Leela Hope. Grady Harp, August 17
Everyday Will Be A Better Day At School
Were you excited when you went to school the first day? Do you remember your first teacher?
The author. Lela Hope, has written a fun and informative story about the first day of school. Penny was a very excited little girl that her first day was here. She got dressed with the assistance of her father, and off they went. Penny enjoyed the first day at first, and then she found she was being made fun of. A little boy teased her about being so tall, and soon other children joined in. Penny was so sad, she did not realize she was taller than the other children, and what was she do to about this problem. When you read this book you will discover exactly what Penny does, and what effect that has on her school days.
Adults will enjoy reading this book to their children. It opens the entire discussion about bullying, and what can be done. Most children will not understand what is occuring, and they will need the assistance of an adult. It is good for them to have some idea of what they should do. The illustrations are bright, colorful and depict the situation Penny found herself in. One of the best things about this book beside the storyline is that it is told in rhyme, and that is one of the most fun ways to read. There are also lessons to be learned, and the author is careful to insert them so everyone understands.
Recommended.
