Keywords

Diana Vicari

Diana Vicari was a 19-year-old college student who was murdered and dismembered in Tucson, Arizona in 1992. Her severed arms were found in a dumpster, and the rest of her remains have never been found.

Angela Brasso

Angela Brasso was a 22-year-old trainer at a communications company who was murdered and dismembered in Phoenix, Arizona in 1992. Her body was found in a vacant field, and her head was later discovered in a canal.

Robert Restler

Robert Restler was a renowned expert on dismemberment murders who was consulted by the media about the Arizona cases. He suggested a possible connection between the two murders due to the unusual nature of the dismemberment.

Dismemberment Murder

A dismemberment murder is a type of homicide in which the victim's body is cut into pieces. This is often done to make it more difficult for police to identify the body or to dispose of it more easily.

Serial Killer

A serial killer is a person who commits two or more murders, typically with a cooling-off period between each murder. Serial killers often have a specific pattern or method of killing, and they may target victims based on certain characteristics.

Arizona Canal

The Arizona Canal is a man-made canal that runs through the Phoenix metropolitan area. It is a popular location for walking, biking, and dog walking, but it also has some dangerous features, such as tunnels that go under roads.

Fisher King

Mark Qualls, known as the "Fisher King," was a man who lived outdoors and fished the Arizona Canal. He found Angela Brasso's head in the canal, which was in surprisingly good condition, suggesting it had been preserved.

Q&A

  • What are the key similarities and differences between the Diana Vicari and Angela Brasso murders?

Both victims were dismembered, but the methods of dismemberment differed. Vicari's arms were severed after death and likely disposed of to conceal the crime, while Brasso's body showed signs of a more elaborate and potentially sadistic dismemberment.

  • Why did the media focus on the possibility of a serial killer in the Arizona dismemberment murders?

The media was influenced by the popularity of the movie "Silence of the Lambs" and the recent arrest of Jeffrey Dahmer, both of which heightened public awareness of serial killers. The unusual nature of the dismemberment in both cases also fueled speculation.

  • What are the main challenges and opportunities in investigating the Arizona dismemberment murders?

The large cities and resources available to law enforcement are positive factors, but the gruesome nature of the crimes and the lack of clear connections between them make the investigations complex. The fact that both cases have suspects from the beginning is a potential advantage.

  • What are the key pieces of evidence that raise suspicions about the boyfriend in the Angela Brasso case?

The boyfriend's alibi of searching for Brasso for hours is not corroborated, and the condition of her head suggests it was preserved, possibly as a souvenir. The boyfriend's statement about a great relationship is contradicted by friends who say Brasso was considering ending the relationship.

  • What is the significance of the discovery of Melanie Burnus' body in the canal?

The discovery of Burnus' body, along with the missing bike, suggests a possible connection to the Brasso case. This raises concerns about a potential serial killer operating in the area.

Dismemberment killings are rare.  We hear of them as these types of stories, make the news and headlines that get clicks.  This is partially because of the rare nature of these types of crimes.  Even amongst those who kill, many simply do not posses the ability to carry out such a horrific act.  In Phoenix and Tucson, Arizona, those communities experienced three such murders in just a twelve month timeframe.  After the first, the Tucson police Captain told the local news “I think the person who did it, will probably do it again.”
