Description

As part of the Global Development Institute Lecture Series Prof Bill Ferguson discussed a political economy approach to collective action, inequality and development. This lecture was the Annual Adrian Leftwich Memorial Lecture presented with the Effective States and Inclusive Development Research Centre.

A society's prospects for development depend on resolving underlying collective-action problems that arise when individual self-interest generates bad outcomes, such as pollution, crime, or war. Political and economic inequalities that skew the attainment
of basic opportunities and outcomes, and the social conflicts that follow, also influence and constrain developmental prospects.

A society's ability to resolve collective-action problems shapes its political and economic evolution. This lecture, a prelude to Prof Ferguson's next book, will discuss a new analytical framework for addressing these issues.
