Prepping Mistakes You Can’t Afford to Make | Episode 512

Prepping isn’t just about stockpiling gear and food—it’s about doing it smart. Too many preppers sabotage themselves with mistakes that shorten shelf life, waste money, or leave gaps that show up when it matters most. In this episode of the Survival Punk Podcast, I walk through some of the most common prepping mistakes I’ve seen (and made myself) so you can avoid falling into the same traps.

Storing Food Wrong

A shed might seem like a great place for long-term storage, but without climate control, extreme heat and cold can ruin your supplies fast. Rice holds up well, but many other foods don’t. Candy is a fun example—my kids’ leftover Halloween haul goes into Mylar with oxygen absorbers as “apocalypse candy.” It works as both a morale booster and a treat during blackouts. But if you toss everything in one bag, flavors will bleed together, and you’ll regret it. Smart storage makes the difference.

Eat What You Store, Store What You Eat

This one gets repeated for a reason. Don’t build your pantry out of foods you wouldn’t touch during normal times. In a crisis, the stress will already be high—you don’t need to force yourself (or your picky kids) to choke down foods they hate. That said, there are staples like rice that you should store even if it’s not your favorite. It’s cheap, versatile, and can be cooked in countless ways once you figure out what works for you.

Neglecting Water Preps

I’ll be honest—talking about water doesn’t spark joy for me, but it’s non-negotiable. You need clean drinking water, period. Store some. Have ways to filter more. If you’re not prepared on this front, nothing else matters.

Overlooking Your Health

The most overlooked prep of all? Your body. Carrying excess weight, ignoring nagging health issues, and skipping exercise will all make you less resilient in a collapse. I’ve lived through this personally—I was close to 300 pounds at my worst, dealing with blood pressure issues. Dropping the weight and focusing on my health turned everything around. Your gear won’t matter if your body can’t keep up.

Final Thoughts

Prepping isn’t about perfection—it’s about progress. But some mistakes are too costly to ignore. Store food smart, keep water ready, eat what you store, and take care of your health. Fixing these mistakes now can save your life later.
