Last year’s film completely won me over despite having zero connection to the musical beforehand. This time… things are a little more complicated.

In this review I break down the spellbinding moments, the standout performances from Cynthia Erivo, Ariana Grande, and Jonathan Bailey, the massive scale, and the goosebump-inducing sequences. But I’m also talking about the clunky story, the baffling changes from the musical, and why this movie feels like a big step backwards despite its incredible craftsmanship.
