In the late 80s.. Just when Hip Hop was starting to gain acceptance.. R&B was still the dominant music on Urban (Black) Radio. But Soon the lines began to blur as R&B began incorporating the Hard beats form Hip hop in the soul sound. And the lead architect in the new sound was Harlem's own Teddy Riley. Beginning with artists like Keith Sweat and Heavy D and Blowing down the Doors with Bobby Brown with the Grammy winning My Prerogative.. The sound dubbed New Jack Swing  took over and gave us some  of the Best R&B  music ever from Guy, Bobby Brown, Blackstreet SWV and More..
