Description

Beneath the Sheets: Anatomy, Art and Power exhibition at Thackray Museum of Medicine in Leeds showcases a unique Victorian-era anatomical drawing of a Black man, believed to be the only one of its kind. Created by Joseph Maclise, a surgeon and artist, this drawing was part of his eighteen fifty-one atlas, Surgical Anatomy, which made human anatomy more accessible. Maclises work was groundbreaking for featuring Black bodies and exploring themes of queer desire. However, when the atlas was published in the United States, this particular image was omitted due to racial prejudice. The exhibition also features other historical anatomical works, including Charles Estiennes fifteen forty-five book and Andreas Vesaliuss fifteen forty-three publication.
