Amrita Sher-Gil, born in 1913 to a Sikh father and a Hungarian mother, was a pioneering artist who shaped the course of modern Indian art. Her South Indian Trilogy stands out as a powerful reflection of India's soul through a modernist lens. Known for her fearless personality and Bohemian lifestyle, Amrita defied societal norms and pursued artistic freedom with intensity. She produced over 150 works before her untimely death at the age of 28. Despite her short life, her legacy is immense—she was posthumously declared a National Art Treasure by the Government of India.
