Q&A

  • Why do some Black voters support Donald Trump?

Some Black voters support Donald Trump due to their stance on issues like abortion, government assistance, and Trump's perceived honesty. They may also be disillusioned with the Democratic Party or believe that Trump is a better candidate for their economic interests.

  • What are the challenges faced by Black Republicans who are trying to make the Republican Party more inclusive?

Black Republicans who are trying to make the Republican Party more inclusive face challenges such as the party's history of racism, the dominance of the MAGA wing, and the perception that they are \"selling out\" their race. They also face pushback from some white Republicans who are resistant to change.

  • What is the \"life cycle of the Black Republican\" as described by Eugene Craig?

Eugene Craig describes the \"life cycle of the Black Republican\" as a process that begins with a Black voter joining the party and being seen as a novelty. As they grow in the party, they may encounter moments where their racial identity conflicts with their political identity. This can lead to disillusionment with the party or a decision to prioritize their racial identity.

  • What is Michaela Montgomery's red line for supporting Donald Trump?

Michaela Montgomery states that Trump would have to personally insult her in a way that is \"stupid\" and \"beyond the pale\" for her to reconsider her support for him. This suggests that she is willing to overlook Trump's racist rhetoric and actions, but there is a limit to her tolerance.

Show Notes

Every four years, the presidential election brings with it a perennial question about an essential voting bloc: Who will Black voters turn out for?

Mother Jones video correspondent Garrison Hayes has spent months on the campaign trail talking to Black voters about how they see the goals and limits of their own political power. He paid special attention to Black Republicans and a new crop of Black supporters of former President Donald Trump.

This week on Reveal, we hear from voters at the Republican National Convention, a graduate from a historically Black university whose star is rising on the right after appearing in a viral video hugging Trump at a Chick-fil-A, and a Republican organizing other Black voters to turn out for Vice President Kamala Harris.
