Description

In 2014, WBEZ Chicago reporter Linda Lutton followed a class of fourth-graders at William Penn Elementary School on Chicago’s West Side. She wanted to explore a big idea that’s at the heart of the American dream: Can public schools be the great equalizer in society, giving everyone a chance to succeed, no matter where they come from or how much money their families have?

Lutton told the story in a Peabody Award-nominated show, “The View from Room 205.” This week, Reveal presents a condensed version of that documentary.

this is one of the most heart breaking stories I've ever heard. I know this happens in every city but rarely is it reported from the kids point of view. As a father of 2 public school girls in grade 6 and 9 it's like my kids school is on another world. my kids go to one of the best option schools in the nation. 85% of them go to college. 100% graduate. my kids have only received As. my kids play multiple sports, have food, overflowing support and encouragement. I'm in tears knowing these kids simply have no chance. no one seems to care. I'm going t to do something about it. I can't go about my easy day while this is happening on the other side of my city. I can't thank the producers of this piece enough. I am going to volunteer at a challenges school and maybe I can save a life. I wish everyone could hear this story. I'll be sharing it with my family. thank you
