In the second episode of this series, we’ll explore groups of 4 notes around the drumset to create grooves and fills. The following 72 combinations include hand-foot combinations, hi-hat/bass drum/snare patterns, and tom fills; the rhythmic solutions are endless! An essential element to keep in mind is the sticking, which is alternated for all these patterns—variations can be made when they better fit the phrasing. Start with a single pattern and repeat it several times until you’re comfortable, then move on to the next one.
We’ll apply the selected pattern in a musical context, alternating three bars of groove with one of drum fill, using 16th notes and 8th-note triplets. In the triplet feel, the pattern is repeated and displaced over the beat—that’s an interesting phrase to develop your timing and improve your ability to internalize subdivisions. To get the most out of your practice, focus on one pattern at a time and try it in different styles and tempos. As an additional study, combine two patterns to create new drum fill ideas, such as playing patterns 2 and 4. You can also use this concept to create new grooves by experimenting with the hi-hat combinations.
Lastly, we’ll add 32nd notes diddles with a series of 8 combinations, as shown in the image below. That’s also a great exercise to practice and improve your double pedal skills. The same concept can be adapted to add flams, ruffs, or accents, representing an endless resource to develop your phrasing and drumming vocabulary.
