On January 1, 1926, Spokanes Episcopal cathedral project, the Cathedral of Saint John the Evangelist, began with high hopes. However, the Great Depression halted construction until 1961. Meanwhile, on January 1, 1976, Spokane mourned the loss of Joseph R. Garry, a Native American rights advocate, born on the Coeur dAlene Reservation in 1910.
