Stop the Steal: The Fight Against Piracy in Uganda’s Creative Industry (Part 1)
Description
Piracy is a silent killer in Uganda’s creative economy, undermining the work of filmmakers, musicians, and content creators while draining millions from the industry. This episode takes a deep dive into Uganda’s anti-piracy fight, from legal frameworks and enforcement to industry collaboration and public awareness.
Head of Litigation, prosecution & Legal Dr. Abudu Sallam Waiswa from the Uganda Communications Commission breaks down how piracy is defined under Ugandan law, the current regulations in place, and the challenges of enforcement. Rinaldi Jamugisa, PR & Communications Manager at MultiChoice Uganda, shares the broadcaster’s role in combating piracy, its impact on business operations and livelihoods, and ongoing efforts to educate the public on the dangers of illegal streaming. From the filmmaker’s perspective, Matthew Nabwiso, Executive Producer at Nabwiso Films, offers first-hand insight into how piracy affects production, distribution, and the sustainability of Uganda’s film industry.
Together, they reveal the real cost of piracy and explore what it will take, policy reform, stronger enforcement, industry innovation, and public responsibility, to build a culture that values and protects intellectual property in Uganda.
