Description

Authorities in Khartoum are exhuming bodies hastily buried during Sudan’s two-year conflict. Thousands have been recovered since the army regained control earlier this year, with many more still in unconventional sites like schools and homes. Residents say intense fighting and RSF checkpoints forced them to bury the dead nearby. Many bodies show signs of decomposition, victims of crossfire, starvation, or lack of healthcare. So far, 15,000 bodies have been collected, with an equal number likely remaining. Forensic experts are few, and limited funding complicates the process of proper reburial. Authorities warn exhumations and cemetery transfers will take weeks amid ongoing challenges. Al Jazeera’s Hiba Morgan reports from Khartoum.
