Preview:
Adam Hochschild's Spain in Our Hearts is an account of the involvement of US citizens in the Spanish Civil War. It focuses on the experiences of a number of individual volunteers and reporters and provides a broad view of how the war affected Spain, the United States, and Europe.
The Spanish Civil War began as a conflict between a democratically elected left-wing government, the Spanish Republic, and right-wing military officers led by General Francisco Franco. At the same time, workers in Catalonia, Aragon, and Andalusia staged a revolution against landowners and established anarchist communities in some areas. These revolutionaries joined with the Republic to fight the fascists.

This Instaread review includes a summary of Hochschild's book and 8 key takeaways. This summary made a difficult part of World History much more understandable, as my history classes typically skim over the details. Not only that, but Instaread distills the 8 most important elements of the war into the takeaways, which range from the influence of Texaco on the war, the impact of American volunteers, and the lingering effects of WWII. If you're struggling to understand this section of World History, I highly recommend reading this summary, it makes the Spanish Civil war easy to understand. I was given a copy of this book to review it.

American involvement in a little-known war
The Spanish Civil War, 1936-39, though it was the lab for testing many of the weapons that were used during World War II, is often overlooked in U.S. history courses. Many Americans, though, were involved in this violent war, serving in the Abraham Lincoln Brigade of the International contingent that supported the democratically elected left-wing Republic government against right-wing forces led by General Francisco Franco.
Summary of Spain in Our Hearts by Adam Hochschild by Instaread is an in depth analysis of a book about U.S.
