Description

On this week’s Sustainability Now!, your host, Justin Mog, takes you on a winter hike with Rebecca Minnick, Executive Director of the Louisville Nature Center. Located in the center of Louisville and adjacent to the Beargrass Creek State Nature Preserve, the LNC offers nature and sustainability education, as well as an urban wilderness experience. The unique urban forest includes two miles of hiking trails through the 41 acre Beargrass Creek State Nature Preserve, and 30 acres of surrounding forest. The Nature Center and Preserve are located on an upland and floodplain forest that has over 180 species of trees, shrubs and flowering plants. It is also home to over 150 species of resident and migratory birds and other animals. The grounds include a Nature Play Area, a Bird Blind, a Rain Garden and a Sensory Garden that are home to butterflies, hummingbirds and beneficial insects, and the center itself, which houses a few reptiles and amphibians, as well as other native wildlife specimens. Rebecca Minnick is a Louisville native who grew up exploring nature around her Clifton neighborhood and joined LNC in February 2018. She has over 20 years of experience as an educator, both at nature centers and in schools. She holds an M.S. in Environmental Studies with focus on Environmental Education from Antioch University and a B.A. in Geology from Hanover College. Rebecca returned home to Louisville after spending almost 20 years in Maine. When not exploring the woods, Rebecca plays guitar and sings in a bluegrass/Americana band called The Song Sparrows. Her dog Hazel also loves to explore the woods, although not the Beargrass Creek State Nature Preserve!
