Description

If we break open the devices we use every day, we find the truth inside them — a web of minerals and metals ripped from the earth, extracted without mercy. Our planet is drilled, crushed, suffocated and sacrificed for our comfort. As an artist working with electronic waste, Suzon reminds us that we are already in a silent war for rare elements — where gold has lost its value, overshadowed by cobalt and lithium. While politicians fight over resources and children dig in mines, we continue to consume, unable — or unwilling — to step away from our privileges.

Tonight’s conversation asked us to look, really look, at what lies beneath our screens, beneath our desires, beneath our silence.

Listen closely. Let it unsettle you. Let it move you.

Guest: Suzon Fuks, multidisciplinary artivist

Suzon Fuks is a multidisciplinary artivist whose award-winning work investigates the impact of technology on humanity and the environment, the politics of water, the status of women, and the experiences of people seeking asylum. Since the early 2000s, she has been creating performances on the Internet, becoming internationally recognized as a pioneer in this field. She was awarded the Australia Council for the Arts Fellowship (2009–2012) and the Copeland Fellowship at the Five Colleges in Massachusetts, where she conceived and developed Waterwheel, a collaborative online art–science platform dedicated to water.

Since 2019, Suzon has been developing a body of work using locally sourced electronic waste — creating artist books reflecting on the shift from analogue to digital technology, designing wearables from discarded components, and performing and activating installations on both human and miniature scales, including works used in her video practices.
