The Adventures of Baron Munchausen (1988) - Episode 31
I THINK, THEREFORE, YOU IS. In this episode, the team take a trip with Terry Gilliam’s fantastical financial flop The Adventures of Baron Munchausen.
In an unnamed city under siege, a theatrical troupe rally to entertain the bedraggled town with a performance of the tall tales of Baron Munchausen, only to be interrupted by the real Baron himself, who decries their inaccuracies and leads the daughter of the theatre’s owner on a spectacular voyage to The Moon, via the centre of a volcano, and in to the belly of a great sea monster to reunite with his estranged, superpowered assistants and lead the charge to end the war.
We discuss the calamitous production and subsequent obscurity of this grand folly; reflect on performers as diverse as long-time theatre star John Neville in a rare cinema performance, a wild Yorkshire Oliver Reed, and a debuting Uma Thurman as Venus herself; and revel in the visual splendour of this wild fantasia, as first-time viewers Gali and Patrick try to make detachable head or tail of what film-picker and avowed Baron fan Devlin has got them in to.
