Very disappointed that the bulk of this conversation was about the political calculations involved in making DC a state and less about the gross injustice of taxing the residents of DC while denying them a vote! This is the very reason we declared independence and went to was with Britain. What is wrong with these people?!

John Smith Eleanor Holmes Norton is a shadow representative. I know she doesn't like that term, but you should watch her speech in sub-committee about DC voting rights - it shows the real deal. She can speak on the floor in subcommittee and can vote in subcommittee. She does not have a vote on the floor, neither does she have any power there. She is the same as the shadow representative from Puerto Rico. They have no influence and cannot swing any vote, because they do not vote on the floor.

John Smith "They?" I am a DC resident. DC has 3 electoral votes for president only (since the 70's). A number, by the way, which can never increase, regardless of population. We DO NOT have voting representatives in Congress. That is, we have no person in the House of Representatives or the Senate making and passing laws. All local laws in the city are subject to Congressional approval, meaning the rest of the country has control on our local laws. The original lines drawn that enclosed DC included part of VA, but VA took back the land a couple years later because the residents were disenfranchised through a denial of representation in Congress. Please know what you're talking about before accusing me of not knowing.
