As more efficient, cheaper and more plentiful energy sources began to be used following World War II, thousands of coal miners across the United Kingdom began losing their livelihoods. In the late 70s, the politics of the coal unions would come to affect national governance and this trend would continue in the lead up to the 1984 Miners Strike.
