By putting a human face to the issues, Ricki paints a picture of how she underwent legal identity changes, medical interventions, and daily acts of bravery just to be herself. She worries that while the law may seem to protect trans people on paper - as per the 2019 court ruling, the reality is that it doesn't translate to protection and inclusion.
