We trace the origins of Falun Gong’s founder and leader, Li Hongzhi, and his teachings that combine meditation, moral philosophy, and supernatural claims. We also examine how Falun Gong attracted the attention and ire of the Chinese Communist Party, which launched a brutal crackdown on the movement in 1999, banning it as an “evil cult” and subjecting its practitioners to imprisonment, torture, and organ harvesting.
