Jared Yates Sexton is an author and political commentator from Linton, Indiana. He is an associate professor in the Department of Writing and Linguistics at Georgia Southern University. On this episode, Kyle talks to Jared about his 2019 book, The Man They Wanted Me to Be: Toxic Masculinity and A Crisis of Our Own Making, where he explores his working class upbringing and his thoughts on what he calls America’s traditional idea of masculine identity.

Jared skillfully and empathically delves deep into the history of masculinity in America detailing how toxic masculinity is an economic device that is hurting men and the people who love them. We also explore how the current political climate and the upcoming election play a role in how people see masculinity.
