Up in Smoke – November 12, 2024
Update: 2024-11-12
Description
Eli Zaret visits to drop some wisdom on minor topics like the future of America and an even bigger deal: The future of the Detroit Lions. Then Shawn drops in to share more tales of his misspent youth.
STRAIGHT DOPE: Eli Zaret is feeling salty after last week’s elections, offering hot takes on how the Democrats got owned. Men playing women’s sports, government-funded gender reassignment surgery and losing touch with working folks are just a few of the things he believes swung the election. Marc begs to differ on some of those issues, while ML says there are some topics Democrats never seem to get to work for them.
Eli, ML and Marc think the Democrats will be wandering the wilderness until they find a candidate who can reclaim the middle and shed the perception they’re catering to the elites. Eli and ML believe there is one politician who may be the Dems’ next Great White Hope. Listen and learn who they’re talking about.
Shawn makes the scene and chimes in that Democrats are suffering because of things like universities offering students Lego rooms and other coping mechanisms for kids traumatized by … life. ML shares that he heard some professors at MSU cancelled classes the day after the election for students struggling with the election results.
The show goes under its own transformation … from politics to sports, as Eli sounds off on the Lions’ latest amazing victory. (He and ML both missed it because they were already in bed — but not in bed together!)
Shawn provides his latest account of Lions fans changing the way airlines operate and taking over flights. Even ML has noticed Lions’ fever, which manifested itself at a local establishment after his latest hockey game (a thrilling 2-1 Bulldogs victory!).
Eli recounts William Clay Ford’s takeover and mismanagement of the Lions – and the role WCF’s daughter played in their ascension.
ML asks how much credit former Lions linebacker Chris Spielman deserves for the team’s success. Eli, Marc and Shawn sound off.
Eli says every team needs a genius – the owner, the general manager or the coach. Who is the Lions’ genius?
ML says on the show that he wrote in his show notes “Never-ending baseball talk.” This is that line. The Tigers talk is fine, but when Eli, Marc and Shawn keep rhapsodizing about the 1986 New York Mets, well, you know…
Marc lauds Shawn for nailing the score of the Lions-Texans game. Later, ML tries to give Shawn credit for his prognostication skills, then instantly regrets it.

GEEK OF THE WEEK:
Mattel’s epic gaffe that referred fans of its new “Wicked” product line to an entirely NSFW – or children – website wins this week’s Geek award.
ROOM 7609: Without any suggestions from listeners, ML dials up a tribute to Marc’s children with Julian Cope’s “Charlotte Anne.” No one is impressed. Send us your favorite deep cut or obscure band – and a story about them or why they mean something to you – by writing to mlsoulofdetroit@gmail.com.
FEEDBACK: Erik thinks the Spartans got rooked again and Sophia smells a conspi...
