Description

For decades, hospitals could assume that patients with jobs and health insurance would pay their medical bills. That’s no longer the case. We speak to one woman about her skyrocketing medical costs — and the aggressive new way hospitals are forcing patients to pay up.

Guest: Sarah Kliff, an investigative reporter covering health care for The New York Times, speaks with Amanda Sturgill, 41, whose health care provider took her to court in Virginia. For more information on today’s episode, visit nytimes.com/thedaily.

are you sure that an anonymous donor actually paid off that debt? I'm not sure that you can just call up the hospital and find out someone's exact amount and then pay it off unless you have their written consent. my wife was in the hospital and she had to give consent for me to be able to discuss her case with the hospital. Hippa. I think it's more likely that the hospital wrote off the debt when the New York times wrote an article about the hospital and what they were doing.

this isn't news. the fact that you think it is is elitist. the bulk of the population already deals with this every single day. this isn't just a new bucket of patients. this was an opportunity to ask why we prioritize money over people and the ways that insurance and the current healthcare system fails everyone. and the interest problem of the fact that healthcare is a for-profit business. instead it was framed as poor people being harmed by their employer's choices. "these are people" rather than "we are people." I thought the New York Time was supposed to be an intelligent, reasoned, and high-quality news source.
