Why kids need to learn about gender and sexuality | Lindsay Amer

Description

Lindsay Amer is the creator of "Queer Kid Stuff," an educational video series that breaks down complex ideas around gender and sexuality through songs and metaphors. By giving kids and their families a vocabulary to express themselves, Amer is helping to create more empathetic adults -- and spreading a message of radical acceptance in a world where it's sometimes dangerous to just be yourself. "I want kids to grow up and into themselves with pride for who they are and who they can be," Amer says.

The types of groups that specifically target the youth (religion, big tobacco, the military) do so because they are trying to influence vulnerable minds before they know better. This is indoctrination, plain and simple. You could replace the whole speech with Why kids need to learn about Christianity, and give a bunch of anecdotes about Christian kids that were bullied. Not helping the argument is the fact that this person seems to identify as a 12 year old, in both speech and thought complexity.

Being gay is not a problem. Failing to draw boundaries and forcing this lifestyle on kids (e.g. Desmond Is Amazing dancing for money in a gay bar and posing with a naked adult, and drag story time for children in public libraries) is a problem. Signs of a nation/culture in decline. Pure degeneracy. It's not a good look for the gay community, and I've heard many gay individuals who are uncomfortable with the direction others are taking.

First two comments have clearly not listened to the talk before they decided they knew enough to comment. Shallow minded judgmental dogmatic bigots. These people are not the future. Gay people are.

Matthew O'Neill That’s what I was trying to say but it didn’t come out right 🤷🏼‍♂️ I was a bit emotional in responding due to personal reasons. Fair comments lads. The future I see has all colours in its flag. We are one. X

Sad, really. Remember when adults used to keep deep topics out of ear shot of children, so they could just be kids? I sure wish I could make that choice for my family, without having to home school them. Any more, that desire is taken away from the parents, because others feel the need to be heard. (oh, and I did listen to the entire cast before commenting. I don't dislike others because of their noninvasive personal choices. I just prefer to let a child be a child for as long as humanly possible, because I don't think they should be grappling with orientatioal concepts as toddlers. Adult level problems are very difficult to manage, don't ruin innocence in an effort to justify a need to introduce them.)

William M Westcott I haven't researched the history of adolescent content filtration. Please do share your resources. In response to your contribution; I would argue that the Ted Talk suggested a much more detailed conversation than you propose. I would only agree with your suggestion in a reactive situation, not proactively offering that to a child. It seems that this need for identity is what has broken some common threads of respect and community. If you focus on kindness to all, without focusing on the unique characteristics, then maybe we would see our culture recover. And more importantly, you prevent a child from assuming they have to define themselves well before they've even been able to learn about life.

Are children equipped to decide on their sexuality and / or place in society?

Exposing kids to this nonsense is child abuse - they should be exposed when they can make their own logical choices
