They shaved the horses, applied a special Japanese dye, and painted them with a custom iridescent mixture. Each horse had a unique talent, and hair extensions were added for uniformity. This method echoes the 1939 film The Wizard of Oz, where four horses were tinted with powdered gelatin. Director Jon M. Chu chose practical sets and effects, giving the film an Old Hollywood feel.
