Working Through Shame with The Unashamed Alcoholic | Journey 33 w/ Becca Atkinson
Description
On this episode, I'm joined by the Unashamed Alcoholic Becca Atkinson. Becca is a public speaker and podcaster who shares her journey, working to remove the shame around being an alcoholic. She has interviewed people such as Mary Walsh from This Hour Has 22 Minutes, Deborah DiGiovanni (a stand-up comedian,) and Theo Fleury, among others. We talk about her path towards becoming the Unashamed Alcoholic, how Bobby Ryan and an anonymous letter to the editor started everything. We then move into red flags, the origins of her thought processes surrounding drinking, and sobriety – how it’s not discussed in our society and how it’s assumed that everyone drinks until someone says they don’t.
We also discuss normalization as the antidote to shame, how vulnerability strengthens relationships as well as helps to weed out the connections that no longer serve us. Finally, we discuss what to do if you realize that you’re struggling, how to take that next step, and how important it is to share your battles with another person.
