The Xbox Adaptive Controller can be connected to external switches, buttons, mounts, and joysticks — giving gamers with limited mobility the ability to customize their setups.
Quadstick:
Designed for quadriplegics, the Quadstick is a mouth-operated joystick that works by blowing air into or sipping air from it.
PDP One-Handed Joystick:
This analog joystick has mappable buttons that enable players to customize their gaming setups and has a soft elastomer-coated finish for extra comfort and grip.
RAM Mount with Ablenet Buttons:
Two AbleNet Jelly Bean buttons attached to RAM Mounts round bases and arms. This setup allows a player to control the game with one leg placed between the buttons.
Development:
In 2015, a team of engineers at Microsoft’s Xbox and gaming division began working on a prototype controller to help improve accessibility for video game input. The device was designed and refined during several internal hackathon events where they built a controller that could use third-party accessories familiar to disabled gamers. In 2017, Microsoft decided to turn the prototype into a product and began collaborating with and consulting accessory manufacturers and groups in the gaming accessibility field such as The AbleGames Foundation.
