Click here for background and on any passage for word meanings and explanatory discussion. rajesh reDDii (1952-living), was born in nagpur and lives in mumbai. All I could get from a radio interview recording is that he fell in love with urdu and particularly Ghazal during his college days. He worked for All India Radio and retired from there. He has published three collections of his verse. This Ghazal is linked to other Ghazaliyaat of the same radeef on the radeef/refrain index page.

1

tere mere diin1 ka mas’ala2, nahiN mas’ala koii aur hai

na tera Khuda koii aur hai, na mera Khuda koii aur hai
1.faith 2.puzzle, problem

This probably refers to prevailing communal animosity. He implies that differences are not because of faith but because of something else. Thus, the differences between your faith and mine are not the issue, the real problem is something else. Your god is no different from mine.

2

maiN jahaaN huN sirf1 vahiiN nahiiN, maiN jahaaN nahiN huN vahaaN bhi huN

mujhe yuN na mujh meN talaash2 kar, keh mera pata koii aur hai
1.only 2.search

This she’r appears to be a paraphrase of what god might say. Where I am, is not the only place where I can be found. Sometimes, I am where I am not. Don’t search for me just in my present form, for I have other addresses/locations/forms. Don’t pigeon-hole me into a single stereotype. I am not a god of the muslims or hindus exclusively.

3

mere faisle1 se Khafa2 hai jo, mere hausle3 se Dara hai jo

mere saath hi meri shaKhsiyyat4, meN chhupa hua koii aur hai
1.decision, determination 2.unhappy 3.courage, resolve 4.personality, identity

The one who is unhappy about my decision. The one who is scared of my resolve. He is hidden within me, along with my personality/ego. Thus, he acknowledges the existence of multiple personalities within himself, sometimes in conflict with each other.

4

vo bhi vaqt tha keh jab aasmaaN, pe dhueN1 ka naam-o-nishaaN2 na tha

magar3 ab ke aag hai kuchh alag, magar ab havaa koii aur hai
1.smoke, fog, confusion 2.slightest trace 3.but

There was a time when there was no trace of smoke on the sky, but this time, the fires have a different character, this time the air blows differently. This could well be interpreted in the political sense about communal confict. We have had such conflicts in the past but the ‘sky was always clear’ – we always knew what is right and what is wrong. But this time, it is different. Communal fires are intentional/planned. The air blows from a different direction i.e., the intentions of the powerful are different. This could also be a reflection of the development of his own thought from certainty to scepticism.

5

tujhe Khud1 se koii gila2 nahiN, mujhe mujh meN koii mila nahiN

mera aaina3 koii aur hai, tera aaina koii aur hai
1.self 2.complaint 3.mirror as in looking at oneself in the mirror

You have no complaint against yourself i.e., you are satisfied, sure of yourself, righteous in your thinking. I looked into myself and did not find anyone i.e., I examined myself but not find any fault there. The mirror you look into is different from mine. Said kabiir …

bura jo dekhan maiN gaya, bura na miliya koye

jo man khoja aapna, mujh sa bura na koye

6

jis ufaq1 pe maiN tha kiran-kiran2, huN usi ufaq pe dhuaaN-dhuaaN3

meri ibteda4 koii aur thi, meri intehaa5 koii aur hai
1.horizon 2.rays of light 3.smoky, foggy 4.beginning 5.ending

On the horizon that I once was a ray of light, on that same horizon I am now a hazy fog i.e., I was of clear thinking, speaking clearly but now I am confused. My beginning was different, but I have ended up in a different place. This could well be a philosophical statement of the development of thought from certainty to scepticism. It can also be interpreted to mean something entirely different. In a very different spirit, mir taqi mir …

raah-e duur-e ishq meN rotaa hai kyaa

aage aage dekhiye hotaa hai kyaa

Why do you weep so much along the long path of love

Just wait there are more problems to come

7

mere fikr-o-fun1 ka Ghuroor2 vo, mere har suKhan3 ka suroor4 vo

mera zahn5 aisa rabaab6 hai, jise chheRta7 koii aur hai
1.thought and capabilities/talent 2.pride 3.word, verse 4.exhilaration, joy 5.mind 6.stringed musical instrument 7.pulling strings

He declares that his mind is the pride and joy of his talent. But his own mind is like a ‘rabaab/sitaar’ that someone else pulls the strings of. Is he saying that his verse is inspired by god … like Ghalib …

aate haiN Ghaib se ye mazaamiiN Khayaal meN

Ghalib sariir-e Khaama navaa-e sarosh hai
