For the final episode of this season on The DiscipleMakers Podcast, we talked with a special guest, Byron Borger, about what it practically means for us to live as though Jesus is Lord in all areas of life. We particularly focused on what this means for college students when it comes to their studies, majors , and future carriers. We were blown away by Byron’s passion and excitement for this topic and walked away from our conversation with full hearts and minds. We hope you have a similar experience as you listen and soak up the wisdom he has to share. He paints a beautiful picture of what it looks like to not just be a Christian that studies a specific topic or has a specific carrier, but what it looks like to fully integrate and intertwine our fields of study with our faith in Jesus and use that as a launching pad to reverse the curse of the fall, build God’s kingdom, and share the Gospel.  -- Resources from this episode: Check out Byron's Bookstore "Hearts and Minds" Books mentioned in the episodeThe Call: Finding and Fulfilling the Central Purpose of Your Life by Os GuinnessLearning for the Love of God: A Student's Guide To Academic Faithfulness by Donald Opitz & Derek MellebyThink: The Life of the Mind and the Love of God by John PiperYour Mind's Mission by Greg Jao--- Our theme music is:bedtime after a coffee by Barradeen | https://soundcloud.com/barradeenMusic promoted by https://www.free-stock-music.comCreative Commons Attribution-ShareAlike 3.0 Unportedhttps://creativecommons.org/licenses/by-sa/3.0/deed.en_US
On this episode of The DiscipleMakers Podcast, we talked with Zack Gugenheim about the connection between our souls and our bodies. Often Christians can tend to want to solve every problem or trial with a spiritual answer. But through our conversation, Zack helped us to see how the Bible actually calls us to view ourselves and others more holistically, as both body and soul working together. This can really help us as we seek to care well for others, and gives us some very practical applications for how we should steward our own bodies to become more effective in our ministry. Towards the end of the episode, we also talked about some particular implications of this topic related to the new semester and the continuing pandemic.  -- Resources from this episode: Help us meet students this fall!  (Book) Cross Talk: Where Life and Scripture Meet by Michael R. On this episode of The DiscipleMakers Podcast, we talked with Mike Chartowhich about evil and suffering. We have a good God, who created the world as perfect, but as sin entered the world, so did evil and suffering. But where does evil come from? Why does God allow evil things to happen in the world? These are big questions that can oftentimes serve as obstacles in our evangelism or in our own wrestling with the realities of our world. The good news in that the Bible has answers. We walked through these questions during our conversation and even talked about how the Christian and biblical answers to these questions are more satisfying than any others you will find.  -- Resources from this episode: Help us meet students this fall!  Resources mentioned in the episodeThe Reason for God: Belief in an Age of Skepticism by Timothy Keller2015 DM Fall Conference on the Glory of God  General books on the topic of evil and suffering:If God Is Good: Faith in the Midst of Suffering and Evil by Randy AlcornWalking with God through Pain and Suffering by Timothy Keller. Christians who wrestled with the emotional problem of evil:A Grief Observed by C.S. On this episode of The DiscipleMakers Podcast, we talked with Brian Roberg about social media. With more and more of our social interaction happening online these days, it is important for us to consider how we interact with the different social media platforms we use to communicate with others. Why are we doing it? What do we hope to get out of these interactions? And most importantly, what do we want others to take away?We talked about these questions in the course of our conversation with Brian, and also considered the motives of the companies that run social media platforms. Towards the end of the episode, we also explored the exciting opportunities we have this fall to meet new students on campus through social media, and invite them into our fellowships. -- Resources from this episode: Help us meet students this fall!  Books:  Competing Spectacles: Treasuring Christ in the Media Age by Tony Reinke. Speaking into the Air: A History of the Idea of Communication by John Durham Peters  --- Our theme music is:bedtime after a coffee by Barradeen | https://soundcloud.com/barradeenMusic promoted by https://www.free-stock-music.comCreative Commons Attribution-ShareAlike 3.0 Unportedhttps://creativecommons.org/licenses/by-sa/3.0/deed.en_US
On this episode of The DiscipleMakers Podcast, we talked with Carin Roberg about honoring our parents. The coronavirus has impacted our lives in many different ways. But one significant way has been our proximity to home, and for many college students, it means being home with their parents. For many of us, our teenage years are often marked with rebellion or disagreement with our parents as we long for independence and yet still find ourselves under their roof and authority. But as we enter college, that relationship begins to change as more independence is gained and we gain some distance and perspective on that relationship. The Bible also has a lot to say about how we should be interacting with our parents, so if you are a Christian what the Bible says on this topic should motivate the way you relate to your parents in a big way.  -- Resources from this episode: Tim Challies has a 5 article series on the topic: https://www.challies.com/articles/the-commandment-we-forgot/ https://www.challies.com/articles/sweet-promises-blessing-terrible-threats-judgment/ https://www.challies.com/articles/momentary-obedience-forever-honor/ https://www.challies.com/articles/one-mans-honor-is-another-mans-shame/ https://www.challies.com/articles/5-practical-ways-to-honor-your-parents/ Desiring God has many articles on the topic, search “honor parents” The Relationship Cure by John Gottman  --- Our theme music is:bedtime after a coffee by Barradeen | https://soundcloud.com/barradeenMusic promoted by https://www.free-stock-music.comCreative Commons Attribution-ShareAlike 3.0 Unportedhttps://creativecommons.org/licenses/by-sa/3.0/deed.en_US
On this episode of The DiscipleMakers Podcast, we talked with Madi Wenger about heaven. In the midst of this coronavirus season, we are constantly confronted by the daily reality of death, especially as the numbers of those who have died from the virus continue to rise. In the midst of not only death, but suffering, pain, sin, disappointment, broken relationships, and more, we long and hope for heaven where every tear will be wiped away.In our conversation, we explored some common misconceptions of heaven and talked at length about what the Bible says we can expect in heaven, how we get to heaven, and how the reality of an eternity spent there should impact or lives every day.-- Resources from this episode: Heaven & Earth – video by the Bible Project--- Our theme music is:bedtime after a coffee by Barradeen | https://soundcloud.com/barradeenMusic promoted by https://www.free-stock-music.comCreative Commons Attribution-ShareAlike 3.0 Unportedhttps://creativecommons.org/licenses/by-sa/3.0/deed.en_US
On this episode of The DiscipleMakers Podcast, we talked with our president Peter Krol about Bible Study. The Bible is the most important book ever written and understanding it is vital as we seek to understand our world, our God, and our condition as humans. Whether you are new to studying the Bible, or a seasoned veteran, it is always helpful to consider how we can study the Bible well, such that our interpretations and applications from it are solid and faithful to the text.In our conversation, Peter walked us through the basics of the observation, interpretation, application method of Bible study that DiscipleMakers teaches. We also talked about the role and usefulness of extra-biblical resources like commentaries. Our hope is that through this episode your Bible study and your knowledge of God will be strengthened and deepened.-- Resources from this episode: Peter's Writings on the OIA Method of Bible Study Book: Knowable Word Blog: Knowable Word Useful Bible Study Aids ESV Study Bible Logos Bible Software  --- Our theme music is:bedtime after a coffee by Barradeen | https://soundcloud.com/barradeenMusic promoted by https://www.free-stock-music.comCreative Commons Attribution-ShareAlike 3.0 Unportedhttps://creativecommons.org/licenses/by-sa/3.0/deed.en_US
On this episode of The DiscipleMakers Podcast, we talked about listening. Our guest started out his journey on this topic as a self-proclaimed terrible listener and was eager to share with us all that he has learned about the topic over the years.Often we can tend to think that we are pretty good at listening, especially if we don’t have any physical hearing issues. But in our conversation, we talked about how hearing is only half of the equation. The rest of listening is hard work and is actually a skill that we can hone in order to build deeper understanding, trust, and relationships with those around us.We also talked about how social media can hinder us when it comes to really listening to, and understanding people.  -- Resources from this episode: Workshop:The Power of Listening: Using Your Ears to Win People’s Hearts by Dan & Becky Miller--- Our theme music is:bedtime after a coffee by Barradeen | https://soundcloud.com/barradeenMusic promoted by https://www.free-stock-music.comCreative Commons Attribution-ShareAlike 3.0 Unportedhttps://creativecommons.org/licenses/by-sa/3.0/deed.en_US

On this episode of The DiscipleMakers Podcast, we talked with Mark Fodale about the perseverance, or faithfulness, of God.This may be a new topic to consider for you. But we hope what you’ll find through our conversation, is that there is immense rest, hope, and peace to be found as we study and gaze upon the character of God.
