PSORIASIS / Today we are starting my multipart group of posts on psoriasis - starting today with the common triggers for psoriasis and what is happening in the body. I am also touching on eczema and how often untreated (or only treated conventionally) eczema eventually morphs into psoriasis or other autoimmune conditions. Tune in for the first step on the road to relief and remission from psoriasis. If you are unfamiliar with the disease process it is a type of autoimmune disease that causes skin cells called keratinocytes to overproduce new skin cells. When this happens you get rough, scaly, dry patches on the skin which can pop up almost anywhere on the body. The process itself is an inflammatory process, like most autoimmune conditions where the immune system secretes proteins which confuse the keratinocytes into overproducing skin cells. Common Causes of Psoriasis Psoriasis at it’s root is often driven by or triggered by a bacterial infection and leaky gut. We are learning more and more about lab markers and indicators for this. Specifically, increased lipopolysaccharides - LPS for short. LPS is found in the cell wall of specific bacteria and is exacerbated by the leaky gut aspect of gluten and dairy primarily. But don’t let this explanation fool you, each and every case as at minimum has a unique aspect to the root cause if not a complete unique root cause itself. This is just some commonality for you to understand the origins of psoriasis overall, autoimmune triggers, including those for psoriasis are always multifacted. Some of those triggers commonly include: 1. Leaky gut - usually in combination with bacterial overgrowth, candida, a parasite or sometimes just insufficient good guys in the gut bacteria. This is typically caused by medications (antibiotics, NSAIDS, antacids), toxins, stress, food choices, vitamin D levels and of course there can be a whole host of other factors. 2. Food sensitivities - food triggers are very very often involved in psoriasis activation and exacerbation. Most common are gluten and dairy and I see a fair amount of eggs and sugar triggers here too. 3. Build up of Toxins caused by either recurring or ongoing exposure to toxins or poor detoxification pathways. 4. Stress - ongoing, chronic, or significant short term stress can trigger psoriasis via activating the immune system. This stress could be mental or physical, so it for example could be anxiety about surgery or the surgery itself that stresses the body. It can even be a mental self-rejection, where the body demonstrates the negative beliefs of the heart or mind similar to what I discussed in the heart episode (episode 041. 5. Specific nutrient deficiencies like vitamin d, zinc, copper, vitamin a, folate driven by a number of factors. 6. Hormonal fluctuations caused by stress or other life stages, adolescent puberty, menopause, etc. Conventional Medical Treatments and Modern Medicine for Psoriasis Anytime I talk about conventional or modern medicine - I feel it is important to repeat I feel like this that I do feel that modern medicine is a gift, for acute issues and to even triage some chronic issues, but it is not an appropriate, safe, or helpful option for chronic disease, especially autoimmune conditions. Now that we got that out of the way, the common conventional treatment for psoriasis is light ther...
RHEUMATOID ARTHRITIS DIAGNOSIS / Rheumatoid arthritis is not a disease of the joints. I know you think I'm nuts already - but stick with me. It’s pretty big business, right? Last I checked upwards of a few million adults are in an active Rheumatoid Arthritis diagnosis at any given time. What is rheumatoid, including how do we get to a rheumatoid arthritis diagnosis? The most common question about RA - What can I do about my rheumatoid arthritis? Rheumatoid Arthritis This is a painful and debilitating autoimmune disease that affects the joints (and skin and energy levels too)! Usually, it shows up with pain, swelling, stiffness, and even some limitation in mobility or movement of the joints. Often times people with rheumatoid, like other autoimmune conditions see flare-ups where symptoms are worse and then periods when they are feeling better (even if it is slightly). Symptoms include swelling and pain in the joints that lasts for six or more weeks. It can show up in any joint, but most commonly starts in the hands, feet, ankles, and wrists. Sometimes the joints are warm and red too. Often this happens in a pattern that is symmetrical - so both hands for example or the second knuckle on the third finger in both hands. Usually, these signs are accompanied by mood swings, fatigue, muscle aches, even loss of appetite or a low-grade fever. Getting to a Rheumatoid Arthritis Diagnosis Rheumatoid arthritis, like other autoimmune diseases, is special because it is diagnosed by a set of symptoms - there isn’t a blood test where you can look and say “yep - your RA test came back positive” usually there are a combination of signs, symptoms, and lab results that indicate you may have the dynamic and when you do (it usually takes 3-5 years of issues) they slap an autoimmune diagnosis label on you. It’s really important for you to know, that Rheumatoid Arthritis Diagnosis is just a label for the downstream effect of an upstream issue. Conventional Treatment for RA Once you have your new fancy label of Rheumatoid Arthritis, usually you are set off on a path of anti-inflammatory medications and steroids to control your symptoms. And it may control your symptoms for a period of time. But there are some really nasty side effects to using those medications long term - like the development of secondary or even more autoimmune disease. Untreated rheumatoid arthritis or RA that is only treated via conventional bandaid methods without addressing the root cause, usually leads to at minimum a poly-autoimmunity situation where you start stacking autoimmune conditions. Other complications include higher risk of heart disease, stroke, kidney problems, headache, enlarged spleen, weak immune systems, nodules, vision problems, oral infections...and that’s not even talking about the effects of the medications themselves. Rheumatoid Arthritis is Not a Disease of the Joints The reason that you continue to get worse, despite your conventional treatment’s best effort is that RA is n...
AUTOIMMUNE DISEASE DIET / We can argue to the cows come home about whether the best autoimmune disease diet! Which one is best or worst or which one works...is it vegan? paleo? anti-inflammatory? Which one is best or worst which one works - stay tuned because we are going to sort out the truths about the best autoimmune disease diet. Today we are talking about autoimmune disease diet. What is best? How do you know? Is a paleo diet best? or a ketogenic diet? or a vegan diet? or basic anti-inflammatory diet? I got some news for you, the answer is - YES. There is a bio-individuality that could make any of those true for someone out there, but none of them are true for everyone. That’s why you will hear people say, "Paleo diet cured my arthritis!" Others will shout from the rooftops that the paleo diet didn’t help them at all - and still others say that the paleo diet made them worse. That darn bio-individuality, right? Messing up all the fad diets. We can make some really educated connections when we talk about each of the autoimmune diseases coming up but specifically for autoimmune disease diet info in general, let's talk about what we know - and then what you might consider too. Lifestyle Treatment for Autoimmune Disease Before we jump into food a la autoimmune diet and nutrition information - I want to make a quick pit stop in lifestyle treatment. Nutrition is about one third of the issue needing to be addressed here. The other ⅔ is lifestyle. Without diving deep those critical lifestyle aspects include sleep, stress, toxic load (people, patterns, or products), movement. Those makeup 2/3s of the issues of autoimmune disease! Crazy right? Now that we have that all cleared up, let's dive in. Autoimmune Disease Diet Here’s what we know FOR SURE…in order to find relief and remission we must optimize digestion or how your food is broken down inside your body, assimilation of nutrients or what your body does with the food you eat), and elimination of the things that your body can’t put to use. Why is Nutrition so Important for Autoimmune Disease The way you go about this is a little different for everyone. We do know that a few things non-negotiably have to go, and nutrition wise we are going to talk about them here. Gluten Gluten is a group of proteins that is found in grains. It makes up 75-85% of the protein content in wheat but is also found in related wheat species and hybrids, such as spelt, einkorn, barley, rye, and oats to name a few as well as products derived from these grains such as bread and malts. These days, with modern food manufacturing, you can bet that many things, even things that shouldn’t have gluten in them do. Unless they are specifically labeled as “gluten-free”. This includes many shampoos, conditioners, topical products, and well as food! (Hint: it's a cheap way to thicken products.) While I firmly believe that the science indicates that no one should be consuming gluten - just like no one should smoke or drink soda - it is especially important to stop consuming gluten if you are suffering from an autoimmune condition.

Autoimmune Disease TriggersWhat Causes Autoimmune Disease Transcript Today we're talking about what causes autoimmune disease. Last week I shared with you, sort of a startling statistic really that autoimmune disease has now exceeded the 10th leading cause of death and women under the age of 65. Like the nice friend I am, I'm also bringing you some more stats today, there are over, 50, million confirmed cases of autoimmune disease in the US alone. Looking around at the people around you and the people you're maybe sitting in traffic passing in your car even think of the homes in your neighborhood the people around you. One out of every six of those people has an official official diagnosis of at least one autoimmune disease. Many people are walking around with autoimmune diseases that are undiagnosed, they just haven't had somebody put together their symptoms. Supringly, even with all those 15 million confirmed cases, it takes an average of 10 doctors appointments before an autoimmune disease is even suspected, and about an average of five years before a diagnosis is reached, and I can say that that has been accurate in my own experience, both with clients and with, you know, my own daughter having a confirmed autoimmune disease diagnosis as well. It's really difficult to lay down a particular cause for any autoimmune disease specifically. In the coming weeks, I will get a little more specific as we go through each autoimmune disease and causes and remedies and health for each one of those diseases individually. If you've been to one of my classes, or even been a client or listen to the podcast before then, you already know that there is no singular root cause for autoimmune disease just like there's no singular root on a tree. Trees have lots of roots that lead to their ultimately healthy or unhealthy existence. Everyone's root cause is special, it's unique to them it's your very own, and even if you have the same exact diagnosis as someone else. You both have psoriasis or you both have rheumatoid arthritis. You both have some sort of thyroid autoimmune thyroid condition you both have type one diabetes, you landed there for different reasons different routes lead to the development of that disease. That's why, for example, you have people that rave that you know the Paleo Diet cured my rheumatoid arthritis and others that say man I tried the Paleo diet and it didn't help me at all, and still others that say, I tried paleo diet, and it made my rheumatoid arthritis worse. Now part of that, of course, is because everyone is unique. And part of that reason is because, nutrition, only plays one part in autoimmune disease. Now it's a super important part, don't get me wrong, but it's also only one leg of that three legged stool. As you know, a three legged stool is to have all three legs or what happens it falls over.
AUTOIMMUNE DISEASE / I have really good news for you. Autoimmune disease is NOT some scary freak out of your body where it begins attacking itself - nope - there is a cause, a trigger if you will. AND even better, where there is a trigger, there is relief. Today we are talking about what autoimmune disease IS and IS NOT and we are busting some myths about autoimmune conditions. Let me know in the comments below - are you suffering from an autoimmune disease? Did you know that autoimmune disease has now exceeded the 10th leading cause of death in women under the age of 65? Yeah, so tune in, this is important. This is NOT something that gets you when you get old and even though there are some countries with better statistics than the US - this is not just a problem here stateside. It’s also a growing source of chronic disease world-wide. Today we will be talking about what autoimmune disease is not, what it is, and some of the why it happens. In this blog/podcast we will not be focusing on nutrition, because there is so much more to it than that, we really have to have a solid foundation in place before you can make nutritional changes last. What Autoimmune Disease Is NOT Before we talk about what autoimmune disease is, let’s talk a little bit about what autoimmune disease is NOT. You may have heard that it is a disease that comes out of nowhere, and the body just starts attacking itself. Let’s bust that myth, because it really is a myth. I think this myth stemmed from and oversimplification of what is actually happening. Then it changed and morphed into this scary urban legend where the urban myth is that autoimmune disease just sneak attacks you without warning or cause. It's kind of like the telephone game, right? This goes hand in hand with another myth I’d like to bust. The image that if  you suffer from an autoimmune condition your body is weak and vulnerable. Also sometimes viewed as having an autoimmune disease is evidence of a weak body. It's simply not true. The body is strong, resilient, with incredible anatomy physiological mechanisms, and even a little magic too. It’s a brilliant machine, breathed to life with that magical Soul of yours. Framing your body as weak because you suffer from an autoimmune disease deeply affects your mindset. We know, science demonstrates to us, our mindset and attitude about our ability to heal, the strength of our body is very important in actually being able to heal our body. I’m here to tell you, and for you to tell and share with others - that the body is not weak and you do not get an autoimmune disease by the body just suddenly going all wack-a-doo and sending the immune system off to attack random body parts. So if you are suffering from an autoimmune disease you NOW know your body is strong . The good news, like REALLY good news about these disease processes not being a randomness or weak bodied thing, is that where there is a cause there is a path way to heal. So now that we no for sure what autoimmune disease is NOT. Let’s talk about what it is. What is autoimmune disease in general? Autoimmune disease is a disconnect. Autoimmune disease is a disconnect between how the body is designed to run in terms of the ...

It's vital to living a full and healthy life, but it is elusive to over 50 million people in the US alone. What can we do to stop it? Natural sleep remedies, sleep hygiene, and sleep fundamentals to get you back on the fast track to catching your zzz's. High-quality sleep is vital to every human’s well being and healing. For that matter - every non-human animal as well. And yet for so many people, it is elusive.  Think of how many times you hear someone say - I’m tired. I’m exhausted. I didn’t sleep. Now one end of that for SURE is the over glorification of busy BUT there is an other side entirely in the time and quality of heads on the pillow. Sleep may not seem very important, I may have thought it wasn’t back in my late teens and throughout my 20s and its quite likely you didn’t either, maybe you don't feel sleep is important for you now.  While the body appears from the outside to be still and inactive, sleep is a time when the body is quite busy. During the night, while you snooze your body is working to restock your hormones, process serious toxins, repair tissue damage, re-arm the immune system with vital white blood cells, eliminate the effects of stress, and process those big heavy emotions. Currently we humans have an epidemic of sleep disorders – from trouble falling asleep to often-interrupted sleep to actual insomnia. Luckily, there are several straightforward remedies I can offer you in the sleep area. Whenever a new health participant is struggling with sleep, it is always one of the first priorities I address in their journey back to wellness. Routinely getting a sound sleep improves motivation and ability to make the changes necessary to heal the body. There are 2 sides to the sleep story, the first part being what goes on in your body, the second being the environment you are sleeping in. BOTH are important to achieve really great nourishing sleep. How You Fall Asleep We human animals fall asleep due to the magic of the pineal gland. The pineal gland is a wee tiny gland, roughly the size of an ant (not a Texas ant, but a regular size one), located near the middle of our skull in the interbrain. Following our circadian rhythm, the pineal gland secretes a neurotransmitter and hormone called melatonin. You’ve probably heard of it in the form of a supplement or sleep aid, but it is naturally produced in the body via this little pineal gland. Melatonin suppresses the activity of many other neurotransmitters, resulting in the calming of the brain. Part of the reason for this brain calming is because it counters things like cortisol, the stress hormone secreted by our adrenal gland.   As you become more drowsy, your brain slowly begins to turn down the volume on our voluntary skeletal muscle functions, eventually turning them off. This is super cool because it is your body’s way of keeping you from moving around so much and doing things like acting out your dreams. Keeping you still is the body’s built in way to prevent disruption of that internal revitalization work I mentioned - the restocking of your hormones, processing of the serious toxins, repairing tissue damage, re-arming the immune system with white blood cells, eliminating the effects of stress, and processing those big heavy emotions. I love to geek out on this stuff but this function is why its hard to move your limbs or shout in response to a nightmare. The same thing happens to dogs - have you every seen a dog dream?
Parenting with Autoimmune Disease Hey friends, you are going to love this episode. I am so honored to feature Rachel Bailey, Parenting Expert as a special guest. I found Rachel originally on The Purpose Show with Allie Casazza, and then I binged listened to all of Rachel's Podcast episodes on driving on a long car trip. When I returned I tried just 1 of her tips to reduce sibling fighting, which had popped up recently for us, and saw an 80% reduction in fighting between my 10 and 12-year-old in the first week. Rachel and I talk about Rachel's definition of "yuck" that we all deal with, as well as how it impacts you negatively. Don't worry, parenting with autoimmune disease brings it's own YUCK and we are going over how it is not your fault, why it happens, and how to outsmart your own biological response. You know, that response to your kiddo that isn't always spectacular - Rachel teaches us how to outsmart it if you are parenting with autoimmune diease. Today we are talking about how to practice gratitude. Gratitude is a practice that turns meals in to feasts and houses into homes. It is a healing practice that is best repeated daily but this time of year is a beautiful time energetically and spiritually to start a gratitude practice regardless of if you have had one in the past. Intro Welcome if this is your first time listening  - I’m Audrey Christie - I’m a functional and integrative nurse nutritionist and energy medicine practitioner. I help women start their very own Autoimmune Revolution so you can stop chasing symptoms and learn how to heal your body from autoimmune disease.   So here's the thing, being grateful having gratitude practicing gratitude thanking the Creator for everything that shows up in our reality, and that means the good and the bad, opens up a Healing Center in our bodies that raises our vibration and it can even raise our vibration to a level where pain and suffering simply don't exist. You might be thinking Lord Audrey is going all off and the woo-woo today. And you know I love my fair share of Wu, but my Wu is backed in science. Research demonstrates that focusing on gratitude, on what we are grateful for, opens up a feeling and emotion that is happier that is more fulfilled. Studies have shown us That gratitude directly impacts greater happiness, Better Health, few are aches and pains, more focus, alertness, and determination, better sleep, and improved self-esteem. And that these things actually lead to more optimism, new and lasting relationships, progress towards personal goals, and increased generosity and empathy. It is a circle that keeps on giving. How I Practice Gratitude and the Impact Gratitude is not something that I take lightly. I have had a gratitude practice for over a decade now and I can simply say that it is life-changing. There is absolutely no downside and practicing gratitude can be as simple or as complex as you'd like. My gratitude practice started with simply journaling 3 to 10 things that I was thankful for each day. and still when I find my default gratitude level wavering, it is a practice that I go back to and still create my list every day. Even though gratitude is a very simple practice, it does take practice to have gratitude as your default mode. Often people have trouble feeling grateful because it is difficult to acknowledge what we have. Sometimes this difficulty is based on taking things for granted and sometimes this difficulty is based in being so busy that we can't slow down enough to be present and aware of what is making us happy. Sometimes it's difficult to feel grateful because it reminds us of less happy times and causes concern that we mi...
Holiday Anxiety Hey friends, the holidays are coming, and so is the holiday anxiety for many. If you missed last week, I talked about all the food and nutrition stuffs and gave you 3 steps to banishing the holiday cravings + guilt + overwhelm that comes with it. Despite the joyous nature of the season, often we are overindulging in food and alcohol, overindulging in expectations and what others demand of us, overstressed, and just plain worn out. This serves to significantly increase our inflammation and decrease our health and wellness. It’s the same for all but scales up when you are living with a chronic illness or autoimmune disease. So in today’s episode, we are going to talk about the holidays the energetic and emotional turmoil, summing it all up in holiday anxiety. If you are inundated with food and drinks from Mid-November through New Years and maybe on into the Superbowl and you combine it with stress, anxiety, emotional ties to the food AND then the family stuffs and budget stuffs that happens - you have a big recipe for big inflammation and effects that last long after the holiday joys wear off. Before we get too far into this, I want you to know for yourself or for a loved one that might be listening or you might be thinking of... the information that I'm going to give today is absolutely not meant to be pill shaming in any way. Pill shaming is toxic and it's time to break down that taboo in society. Working through anxiety is hard enough oh, it makes it even harder around the holidays, and then adding pill shaming and stigma creates an even more difficult situation. There's a lot of misinformation out there about antidepressants and even antipsychotic drugs. Yes, they can do a lot of damage to the body but sometimes people require that extra bit of help to enable them to live a normal and happy life. The strategies were going to talk about in this episode are generally enough for people to reduce their dependence on medication sometimes even eliminated, but not always. Every human deserves a life neither ruled by stress or fear or crushed by depression and anxiety.

Despite the joyful season, often we are overindulging in food and alcohol, overindulging in expectations and what others demand of us, overstressed and just plain worn out. This serves to significantly increase our inflammation and decrease our health and wellness. It’s the same for all but scales up when you are living with a chronic illness. So in today’s episode, we are going to talk about the holidays and food and cravings. About indulging in those things you wait all year long for in the least health-damaging way. (Next week we will talk about the energetic and emotional stress too.)   Intro Welcome if this is your first time listening  - I’m Audrey Christie - I’m a functional and integrative nurse nutritionist and energy medicine practitioner. I help women start their very own Autoimmune Revolution so you can stop chasing symptoms and learn how to heal your body from autoimmune disease. Okay - so here’s the thing - I don’t care how good the book is or how phenomenal the supplement is - there is no quick fix for your health. There is quick symptom masking - what I like to refer to as band-aid medicine. And now there is quick symptom masking and bandaids with natural remedies too. If it's true healing, from the root cause of your issue, that you are looking for, if you are looking to create health, I’m sorry to say - there just isn’t a short cut. What there definitely is though, is a foundation that you can build to help make healing faster and easier, to help to create health, no matter where you are on your journey. The Typical Holiday Cycle If you are inundated with food and drinks from Mid-November through New Years and maybe on into the Superbowl and you combine it with stress, anxiety, emotional ties to the food AND then the family stuffs and budget stuffs that happens - you have a big recipe for big inflammation and effects that last long after the holiday joys wear off. As I mentioned, I hear from many more of my clients and listeners this time of year who find the holiday season to be extremely challenging, and I completely get it. I hear from my friends and connections a lot of “I wish my h...
Top 10 Tactics to Create Health Hey friends, oftentimes we are looking so hard at what we need to take away, tweak, add, hyper-focused on symptoms that we forget to start back at the basics. It’s really important to create health with a solid foundation before you start to tackle those bigger issues. It’s not as sexy to build the foundation first, especially when collectively we are marketed to for quick fixes to create health and instant gratification. (Here’s a hint: there’s not a quick fix.) In today’s episode, we are talking about 10ish tactics to create health. No matter where you are on your health and wellness journey, these tactics will serve as foundational wellness for you. Create Health Intro Hey friends, oftentimes we are looking so hard at what we need to take away, tweak, add, hyper focused on symptoms that we forget to start back at the basics. It’s really important to have to create health with a solid foundation before you start to tackle those bigger issues. Top 10 Health Creating Tactics 1. Sleep. There’s no getting around this one. If you are sleep-impaired chronically, it's not possible to create health to live vital, vibrant, energetic lives. You are looking for good sleep and waking up before your alarm about 90% of the time. A few quick tips here, go to bed when your body is tired (even if it's 8:30 pm.) Practice sleep hygiene. Let your brain know in the hour before you are getting into bed that you want to wind down and prepare to sleep deeply. 2. Play. Yup, I’m serious. Many of us behave as though there is a large prize at the end of life rewarding us for working as many hours as possible and checking off as many things on our neverending to-do lists. Guess what? There’s not a prize other than regret and missed opportunities! What’s more important than a to-do list? Savor life. Laugh. Play. Relax. Have fun. Don’t let your rejuvenating activities end up just being an hour or two of mindle...
Nutrient Deficiency: an Autoimmune Trigger Hey friends, are you suffering from a nutrient deficiency? On the surface, many of you would say no, because often we think of nutrients as calories or food volume and you’re likely not starving.  But the reality is that many most humans are suffering from some kind of nutrient deficiency., It becomes a bigger issue when it is part of the perfect cocktail that triggers an autoimmune disease.  In today’s episode, we are talking about 6 key nutrient deficiencies that commonly cause autoimmune troubles, part of the soup that can trigger autoimmune disease. On the surface, many of you would say no, because often we think of nutrients as calories or food volume and you’re likely not starving. I help women start their very own Autoimmune Revolution so you can stop chasing symptoms and learn how to heal your body from autoimmune disease. So as you may already know, Your autoimmune system is complex, so complex, when you study it, you can really perceive the miracle of the immune system. It almost seems magical. But like anything with complexity, there are many issues that can arise to cause your immune system not to function properly. It’s nothing to live in fear about, but important to note. One of those complexities we hear about often, and I'm even guilty of talking about it often is consuming foods that are inflammatory or that are triggers for inflammation. It could be foods that are triggers for the population in general, for all humans, or specifically for you. The flip side of that coin is being in a nutrient deficiency. There are many nutrient deficiencies out there but there are some really specific ones that happen with or trigger autoimmune disease. Interestingly consuming these inflammatory foods can often also be part of the root cause of a nutrient deficiency. Crazy right? Eating food-like substances and ultra-processed foods even, though they say they're fortified with vitamins and minerals, can trigger a nutrient deficiency. Nutrient Deficiency Mini Case Study I have a client who had just slight thyroid hypofunction, just a little bit it was almost undiagnosable conventionally. Luckily she had a good family practice physician, that recognized she was on heading towards thyroid dysfunction or diagnosable thyroid condition and sent her my direction. In my method of healing autoimmune disease, we start with clearing the muddy waters. We stopped her inflammatory habits so that we could see what symptoms were actually left after all the general inflammation cleared.
Morning Routine Last week we talked about the morning routine, this week as promised, let's get on to nighttime routines. I help women start their very own Autoimmune Revolution so you can stop chasing symptoms and learn how to heal your body from autoimmune disease. I feel like we had some grumbles last week with morning routines, many people aren’t morning peeps, and that is a-oaky. As you learned last week - a morning routine isn’t reserved for only those people that are early birds. Personally, I am a morning person, and for sure not a night owl, but being a morning person doesn’t stop me from having a nighttime routine that works well to help me drift off to sleep and stay asleep. In the Autoimmune Revolution membership, one of the FIRST things we work through is SLEEP. Why? Because, as Thomas Dekker famously said, it is the golden chain that connects our body to healing. So often when we start to examine what the Autoimmune Revolution members are doing, why they might not be getting optimal sleep - heck even sometimes part of the reason they are suffering from so much anxiety. When going through and assessing where our routines are, I have found that everyone has some sort of morning and nighttime routine, they are present but are actually contributing to their inflammation, rather than assisting the body in healing. So last week I said it was my mission to change your mind, and we are working through morning routine steps in the Wellness Circle now - that is the private Facebook group where we take these episodes and dive deeper and support each other...
Morning Routine What is your morning routine? Are you the fall out of bed and rush right into the day type or the lay in bed and play on your phone type? Maybe your morning routine is just hitting that snooze button over and over. Either way - technically it is a morning routine, but not exactly a morning routine that helps to set you up for success. Today we are talking about morning routines (if you haven’t guessed) and you will learn the importance of a morning routine, how it helps set you up for success, and how it helps you heal your body or maintain your health. No matter where you are on your wellness journey, a morning routine will carry you through to big wellness benefits. I help women start their very own Autoimmune Revolution so you can stop chasing symptoms and learn how to heal your body from autoimmune disease. Are you a morning person? It's okay if you aren't! I know not everyone is a morning person, and I am a bit partial to morning routines because I am a morning person. But equally important - is an evening routine which we will cover that next week so stick with me through this and come back for that episode too. Even if you aren’t a morning person, establishing a morning routine WILL help to revolutionize your morning and the rest of your day. After all, is what you are doing now making your morning delightful? Let me share a story with you... Not long ago I posted in the Wellness Circle about morning routines - and I listed a cute graphic that had some morning routine information on it. It said each morning to cleanse and refresh, attract abundance, connect mindfully, ignite clarity and creativity, self-heal, be open to change, manifest, and nurture with self-love. The reaction I got was a resounding WHAT THE HECK? WHO HAS TIME FOR THAT? And my response was like huh? That takes 30 min or less - I do that first thing each day! So I am now making it my mission - you are welcome - to change your mind and get you started on an awesome morning routine. I had no idea so many people didn't have one! This will actually create MORE time in your day and help you heal from autoimmune disease or stay healthy and well if you aren’t on an autoimmune journey. Morning Routine Steps I could totally give you a list of steps to a morning routine, of which you would likely implement all of them and then fail.

Sugary - flour-y - dairy - egg fluffy rich treats can wreak havoc on your health, but they don’t have to. There are such good subs available! Healthy baking substitutes can transform a dish into something healthy or at least healthiest without all of that inflammation. Let me share a story with you... I think that is a common thought when people listen to me and when they see I practice what I preach. And my kids do too. They think that I must be missing out. I have even been given sympathy for my “poor kids” and myself for choosing to eliminate certain areas of our nutrition that were causing massive inflammation and illness. Funny thing is - we still have ice cream - I still make cookies - we still have cake on birthdays and pie and stuffing on holidays BUT it is without gluten, dairy, white sugar, and eggs. And it still tastes AMAZING. We even still make the occasional Starbucks run - I will share more tips on that soon. Here are some of my fav swaps... As summer comes to a close this year, it feels so good to welcome Fall's wonderful season. The crisp idyllic air, the vibrant colors of the leaves changing, and the starting point of a storm of holidays all make this time of year perfect for getting creative in the kitchen. Food Intolerance Symptoms What do food intolerances and symptoms have to do with each other? You have heard me say before, that autoimmune disease or chronic illness is a tree with many roots.  Meaning, there are many root causes for everything that you experience symptom wise. Including food intolerance symptoms - that may not even seem like they are related to food. Why focus on food intolerances and the symptoms that come from them, especially when there may be bigger more dangerous food allergies to discuss?  Easy - most people are eating foods they can’t tolerate, having big symptoms from it, and they don’t even know it! In my anecdotal experience, about 80% of people I have helped over the years have symptoms coming from a food that they adamantly claimed, “ I don’t have a problem when I eat it.” Today you will learn what food and symptoms have to do with each other and why it matters for your healing journey - no matter WHAT your healing from. Overall, food allergies, sensitivities, and intolerances are on the rise. The statistics tell us that about 1 and 4 people are aware that they have an issue with a particular food, but many many more are suffering from them and just haven’t connected the dots. Even further - a bunch of people blame the wrong food - often because they read a book about gluten or lectins or some other nutrient that must be causing their issues. Many researchers have proposed the reason that these food issues are on the rise is a result of our food manufacturing and farming processes. I don’t think they are wrong at all, but I do think it’s just one piece of the puzzle. Let me share a story with you... Literally every person I talk to has some sort of food sensitivity symptom - sometime...

What does it mean if all of your labs are within the lab ranges but you still have symptoms? Is there another way to look at things? Today we are getting into the labs your doctor may or may not be running and how they can give you clues as to what the root causes is for your autoimmune disease. We will also be touching on if these fancy labs that you can have done are a distraction or a necessary step. Now if you're thinking oh, this doesn't apply to me because I don't even think I have an autoimmune disease, stay tuned these lab results, this information is important for everyone for you to look at when you have an annual physical, or when you have any other lab work done. There's a lot of room in a normal blood test result... In conventional medicine, labs are looked at as inside or outside of the reference range. You are either higher or lower and if you're within the normal range - nothing is wrong. And as you may have experienced for yourself, there is a lot of sickness and symptoms inside those reference ranges. In fact, if you are well outside those ranges - that is only about 2.5% of the population on most lab tests. If you compare that to the growing number of autoimmune disease cases - you can see just how much sickness can live within a normal lab result. What do your autoimmune blood tests reveal? Let me share a story with you... I get lots of stories in my practice, here’s one that stood out as needing to share with you today: Kim shared, “My primary care doc believes I have an autoimmune disease, but I'm still 4 months away from the first available appointment with a specialist. Since I can't see my doc until then and I'm going bananas trying to figure out what's going on. My symptoms set in around February of this year, just in time for the world to end due to the lockdown. I'm suffering from pain in ALL of my joints, exhaustion, headaches, extreme photo-sensitivity,
How to Test for Autoimmune Disease How to test for autoimmune disease is really a multiple part process - and the results may leave you wondering if you have one at all.  Maybe even wondering why you waited so long. Most people take an average of 5 years to get to a diagnosis and then begin treatment. 5 years. Do you know what could have been un-done in those years? How far could you have come on your healing path while you were waiting for this label?  Today we are covering exactly how to test yourself for autoimmune disease and other chronic illnesses without diagnosing yourself or even performing anything more than a few at-home tests. I have also included a quiz to help you on this path. Over the next 2 weeks, we will be talking about interpreting some common labs and why labs may not even be needed and some of my favorite trackers to assess where you are in your healing journey. As I mentioned most people who are suffering from a symptom or collection of symptoms that just won’t go away, spend an average of 5 years to get to a diagnosis. Five whole years. Five years of suffering and stressing and making whatever was there label-less WORSE. Even when you get the label what does that change? It changes nothing. You still have the same option of conventional medicine to mask the symptoms or starting your own revolution in your health and wellness to heal your body. What could you have healed while you were stuck waiting? Let me share a story with you... I get lots of stories in my practice, or maybe they could be considered complaints? Or even cries for help? A few stand out here: Holly, came to me because she had some lab results that she didn’t understand and she had already been diagnosed with Hashimoto's - but she is still having symptoms and inflammation after years of treatment. She got new labs and was waiting for months to see her doctor. Cally said this in her intro interview,
