I couldn’t imagine being told that I’m not allowed somewhere because of my ethnic background. In this episode of 1st Person Stories Helda visit Hebron and shares about "the city below cities," spies and the discrimination she faced while visiting the burial sites of several biblical patriarchs. Taking yourself outside your routine with the people who share routine with you can be a powerful catalyst for unique bonding experiences. When you travel with family, chances are good you’ll go home with some amazing moments together that you’d never experience from the comfort of your living room. In our final episode of the season, find out how bioluminescence, adventures in local food, and the great outdoors in a conversion van with your folks can strengthen family ties.
During our conversation with Hoda I couldn’t help but reflect on the opportunities that I have missed out on due to my fear of the unknown and lack of spontaneity. The fear of not knowing where a road leads is real, reasonable, and something we all can relate to. In Episode 9 of the 1st Person Podcast, Hoda tells us the story of how she overcame this fear during her 3 weeks away in Seattle, WA.
Moving to a new country can be both exhilarating and daunting. As Paola shares stories about her move from Bogotá, to Silicon Valley via Wisconsin I recall my move to the states as a youth. Could you imagine what it would be like if you made such a move now. In Episode 8 of the 1st Person Podcast, Paola tells us why she’s still living her life changing experiences as she relocated from Columbia to North America.
I remember the close bonds I formed in college and the ones I built right after. Imagine starting your first job in a new country. You’ve just graduated college, and are leaving your friends for rural Japan. I wonder how I would react? Join us as Jason shares about his move to Japan right after college and trips taken through Asia.
Kofi spoke of conversations with his grandmother while in Ghana and I wondered what it would be like to talk to my grandparents or older ancestors who are all gone. How would my outlook on life change because of that conversation? How would yours? In Episode 6 of the 1st Person Podcast, Kofi shares about being inspired by stories of his ancestors during his first trip to Ghana.
Would you travel alone? Like to Italy or China? Sometimes when you go places you've never been before by yourself, something amazing happens, you find yourself. In episode 4 of the 1st Person Podcast, Amber shares about traveling solo to France, Italy, and China and learning about different cultures and herself along the way.
Andrew speaks about culture shock and learning to go with the flow while on his adventure through Southeast Asia and elsewhere. So many people would tell you when you take yourself out of your comfort zone and have new experiences, you change as a person. It's cliché because it's true. In Episode 4 of the 1st Person Podcast, Andrew shares about his shift in worldview after being exposed to new spaces, new cultures, and the challenges faced on his journey.
One day Melissa decided to go on tour. So she did. She didn't wait for permission or approval. Her and her bandmate, Kit, simply hit the roads and had the time of their lives. In Episode 3 of the 1st Person Podcast, Melissa takes us on a road trip across the US with her band Good Asian Drivers performing 30 shows in 24 weeks.
Sometimes we have to get away from it all to put things in perspective. We grow quite a bit by traveling to different places. Often times we learn about ourselves more than anything else. In Episode 2 of the 1st Person Podcast, Neno talks about a paradigm shifting moment he had during his adventures through Colorado.
Imagine having the opportunity to get all your unanswerable questions answered. What is my purpose?... Why am I here?... Is there a God?...
