Helmed by one of the state’s most distinguished musicians, the show features national artists, fresh local faces, and the music of Martha Bassett. Each show is a collaboration in song and conversation between Martha, her band, and the guests. It's good music for good people!

The Martha Bassett Show welcomes Liz Longley, Bill West, and DaShawn Hickman Presents Sacred Steel to the Reeves Theater in Elkin, NC! We have two great singer-songwriters on this one. Liz Longley joins us from Nashville, TN and Bill West returns to the show from Chapel Hill, NC. And our friend and bandmate, DaShawn Hickman, brings his new project to the show which features Wendy Hickman, Charlie Hunter, Brevan Hampden, & George Sluppick.
This show from February 17, 2022 welcomed Victoria Victoria to the show for the first time. Good friends Jonathan Byrd and Rex McGee returned also and Rex brought along his sons’ Gus and Harmon. Tori Elliot and her band play some of the great new songs from the recently released "To the Wayside." And her band backs up Jonathan on his song "Fog on the Mountain."
Presley Barker returns to the Reeves Theater with his brother Luke. On this show from May 20, 2021 we also welcomed EmiSunshine to the show for the first time. These are two of the finest young musicians out there and we were honored. Both have been out there working since the age of 9 and continue to find new and exciting directions. Along with their great music, Martha and the band also do a fun version of the Merle Travis song, "Sixteen Tons," made famous by Tennessee Ernie Ford.

The Martha Bassett Show welcomes Zoe & Cloyd, Gaelynn Lea and Rex McGee to the Reeves Theater in Elkin, NC! Zoe & Cloyd join us from Asheville, NC along with Kevin Kehrbergh on the bass. NPR Tiny Desk winner Gaelynn Lea makes her first appearance on the show and Rex McGee steps out with band member Fiona Burdette on mandolin for a prodigious feature number.
This show from June 3, 2021 was Dom Flemons’ first visit to our show and we had a ball! All of the other folks on this one have become fast friends of TMBSalso and we always look forward to their return. Along with Dom’s historical knowledge, superb musicianship, and wonderful stage presence, we welcomed virtuoso dulcimer player Sarah Kate Morgan and the Dan River Girls back to the show.
Our first show of Season 4 was a feel good time! Life had begun to open up a bit on the pandemic landscape and we had one of our funkiest friends, Colin Allured, to the show and he was quick to point out, “It’s Party Time, Baby!” We also welcomed the remarkable singer-songwriter Lyn Koonce from Greensboro and she brought a whole batch of great new songs from her most recent record, “Begin Again.”
This show from November 5, 2020 was the last show we did of the first pandemic year and it was quite a celebration of strength through adversity. We welcomed 2 of North Carolina’s finest bands: Violet Bell and Chatham Rabbits. All of the folks on this show are about as talented and sweet as they come. We had lots of collaboration and went everywhere from mythical sea creatures to Brené Brown and the merits of vulnerability.
The Martha Bassett Show welcomes Heather Maloney to the Reeves Theater in Elkin, NC! Heather hails from Massachusetts and has received numerous accolades for her signature brand of endearing, powerful folk songs exploring themes of spirituality, transformation, and impermanence. The old-time duo of Tatiana Hargreaves & Sonya Badigian also join, with some wonderful “brother” duets, and Ryan Newcomb captivates with his beautiful singing and songwriting.
Our second show of Season 2 was a first in many ways. We had our first spoken word artist on the show – Minton Sparks! The incomparable singer-songwriter Jonathan Byrd returned, being our first guest to do so after being on our first show ever in 2018. And lastly, Shohei Tsutsumi was our first international guest. A devoted student of old-time music, Shohei had relocated for a time from Japan to Elkin to further his studies by learning from some of the area’s greats and taking part in festival competitions.
The Martha Bassett Show welcomes Outlaw Country diva Elizabeth Cook to the Reeves Theater in Elkin, NC. Elizabeth is known not only for her amazing songwriting but also for her show “Apron Strings” on Sirius XM and also as the television host of “Upstream.” Caleb Caudle also joined the show along with old-time band The YeeHaw Ramblers. This is a delightful, witty, and high energy evening with lots of laughter and mesmerizing music. As Elizabeth said, “I’d put my money in the Martha Bassett bank!”
This show from October 6, 2018 was Sam Baker's first visit to our show and what a treat! All of the folks on this one have become fast friends of TMBS and we always look forward to their return. Along with Sam’s gorgeous songwriting and delightful banter with Martha, Sarah Kate Morgan visits and is regarded as one of the finest dulcimer players anywhere and is an equally gifted vocalist. Ben Singer also joins and shares some great new songs with us.

The Martha Bassett Show welcomes Casey Noel and Charlie Hunter to the Reeves Theater in Elkin, NC. Charlie Hunter is nothing short of a titan in the jazz electric guitar world. We are delighted that he recently relocated to Greensboro, NC and brought along his infectious groove and collaborative spirit to the region. Singer-songwriter Casey Noel has some songs from her new record including “Marsh Girl” and also a new one, “Page 52.” Rex McGee is featured in the band on fiddle and also performs a solo banjo piece from his legendary album “24 Creations for Solo Banjo.”
We kicked off Season 2 with two of the finest purveyors of Scottish fiddle music you’ll set your ears on – Alasdair Fraser & Natalie Haas. They travel the world teaching and performing so we were thrilled that they stopped in and visited us in Elkin. We also welcomed the singer-songwriter Bill West and the Dan River Girls to the show. The Dan River Girls have been long-time students of Alasdair and Natalie, at their renowned fiddle camp on the Isle of Skye in Scotland, so this show has some spirited collaboration!
Jill Andrews visited the show on March 7, 2020 along with Rod Abernethy and Joe Thrift & Russell McCumber. Jill shared some songs in advance from her then new album “Thirties” and chats with Martha about the accompanying book, motherhood, and recently getting married. Rod joins in with some amazing guitar features and a beautiful song for his father. Martha shares a Blaze Foley song and we rounded out the night with Thrift & McCumber playing some good old-time music.
This show from October 2, 2020 was the fourth in our Streaming Series, due to Covid, and we featured two incredible songwriters. Chance McCoy (Old Crow Medicine Show) shared some great new songs and filled us in on his recent work in film both as an actor and composer. Matty Sheets hails from Greensboro and has been a pillar of the NC scene for years. He brought along Ben Singer and Laura Jane Vincent for the fun and also premiered a beautiful new song, “Hit the Road.”
TMBS kicked off Season 3 in big fashion with the delightfully nostalgic sounds of Bill and the Belles. They also host the PBS television show Fam and Fun Time! We also welcomed singer-songwriter Abigail Dowd along with her husband Jason Duff to the show. North Carolina icon Snüzz joined in also to add his beautifully crafted pop gems to the evening. And to top it off, Martha premiered her new setting of “A Red, Red Rose” by Robert Burns.
The Martha Bassett Show welcomes John Howie Jr. and Sonny Miles to the Reeves Theater in Elkin, NC. John brought along some of his poignant and heartbreaking country songs and Sonny got the house dancing with his signature soulful sound. Martha and the band jump in as usual and Martha does a beautiful version of “Cry Me River” which features Rex McGee on fiddle. Rex also performs a piece from his legendary album “24 Creations for Solo Banjo.”
Amythyst Kiah visited the show on September 1, 2018 along with Riley Baugus and Joe Thrift & Russell McCumber. We knew Amythyst had a powerhouse voice but we were still amazed to stand alongside her. Riley Baugus is an old-time fixture around these parts but is also known for his work on the movie “Cold Mountain” and for working with Willie Nelson. He also makes banjos, so with the inclusion of fiddle makers Thrift & McCumber on this one we had a lot to talk about.
